SCCC 2011 Ammerman Day Nursing Program

Published

This thread was started for everyone who will be attending the 2011 SCCC Ammerman Campus Day RN program. I think it might be worth it to have a thread especially for us, so that we can keep in touch with our fellow students, talk about issues that come up in class and help each other out when necessary.

if you are reading this now, you have probably been accepted into the program... Congratulations

Let's work together so that we can be the best both as students and in our future careers.

Hi Guys,

Does anybody on the board know anyone who has graduated from this program and has gotten employment? During one of the nursing seminars, the Dean mentioned that every student was placed with a job upon graduation. After searching the other threads it seems like the economy has even struck this field and BSN's are preferred. I'm just curious if employment in nursing in this economy is as easy to come by as it historically has always been, or if it is just like any other occupation.

My preference would be to work in a hospital. However, as this is a second career for me, I will take any employment available, be it a nursing home or hospital or whatever. Just curious... What do you say?

It really depends on what you want to do. Hospitals want you to have your BSN. Atleast I know stony brook does. Nursing homes, intermediate care facilities, and agencies will hire if you have your associates. The restrictions are always less strict when nurses are in more demand. But there are jobs out there, you just have to be flexible. :) I plan on going to sbu after sccc, do you plan on going for the BSN?

And Ndauria, Yes, I do hope to eventually get my BSN but I hope to do it while working. I was just curious if anyone knows anybody that recently started working as a nurse out of SCCC. A coworkers wife is presently in her first year at Ammerman nursing program and he said that the buzz is that jobs are hard to come by.

Jobs are def harder to come by now a days. Stick with nursing homes and I know intermediate care facilities hire too :) I'm hoping to do the same, work while I goto school. :)

I worry about this too, but don't forget we still have 2 years. The job market may change for the better. A BSN is definitely preferred, but just browsing around online, most of the jobs don't say required, they just say preferred. That doesn't leave us out completely. I know a bunch of nurses with an Associates and they are all working in a hospital.

My sister in law graduated from SCCC last year with an associates and she got a job right away at St.Charles. It's possible.

Thanks for the replies guys! That's hopeful if you know somebody that started at St. Charles right out of Suffolk. It's funny, I'm just leaving one job and already can't wait to start another.

Oh well, 2 years to go.

People that I know that are working in hospitals with Associates are getting pushed to go for the BSN. They are being given a certain amount of time to get the degree I'm told or they are out of a job. I guess it depends on the hospital. I just know sb won't even look at you without a BSN which is upsetting. :/ but you're right! We have two years and I'm sure we will all find employment :)

I registered for classes the day after I got the letter. I signed up for CPR class at Smithtown for the upcoming Monday evening. Is anyone else going to the evening orientation? I have a phlebotomy class at Stony Brook till 4pm, so i have to go to the evening.

I signed up at Smithtown this coming Monday too! May 23rd at 6:30pm.

Hello everyone! I just got the phone call today that I was accepted into the program!! :jester::yeah:

Now, I'm terrified because I will have to quit my day job (won't be doing that until closer to September). I am certified as a Nurse Assistant, so I will be looking around for jobs in local hospitals or nursing homes.

Anyway, tremendously happy to be joining you all! See everyone in class! :D

Hi Hopefulinurse,

Congrats! I'm a CNA too. I'm switching to evenings so i can go to day classes. You should be able to find something.
