guys i'm scared outta my mind right now. in the course of two weeks, i've quit my job and decided to finally chase my dream of becoming a nurse. thing is, i have no idea what to expect or what's ahead for me. i feel like i've just jumped off a cliff and am in the midst of a free fall without any idea of how far away the bottom really is. this is like nothing else i've ever done in my life, i mean i used to be a train conductor for goodness sakes. i start school in may and i've never been happier in my life. nor have i ever been more scared. any advice or encouragement you could shoot my way would be greatly appreciated!!!
thanks so much and i look forward to joining all of you soon!

Good luck in your schooling. I think you must really, really want this job!
May I offer this advice: don't jump out of the airplane without a parachute!
I can only assume you have income while going to school - if not, you might want to find a part time job or a full time position (if you can swing a full time job and school???).
In the meantime, you will find encouragement here at "allnurses".

HAHA! Well, I didn't do it quite the way YOU did but I must say it was one of the best decisions of my life. Almost finished with school and loving it all! Yes, school is REALLY HARD, yes, the MD's are mean and scary, yes the families are a pain, yes sometimes I get treated like a servant, yes, we are understaffed and underappreciated, but I LOVE MY JOB! I love that I can make a difference, I love being the one who cares (for a few hours), I love leaving my work AT WORK. I love it all, and so will you!
WELCOME TO OUR WORLD! :loveya:

if it is what u love and dreamed of, you dont have to worry.everybody started from scratch.(no one was born nurse) do good in school, take in all the info you need, and have a sensible mind and proper attitude, youll be fine..if you really love it, its worth trying it..sooner or later you will get a hold of everything, and there, you can decide whether you will continue or not. but for the mean time, welcome to the world of nursing, and enjoy :) have fun while learning :)

Congratulations!! You have made the best decision of your life! Nursing is a great career. I can't think of anything else like it! A nurse is in control of so much more of their work life than most careers. We are the ones in demand, so you can change, explore, travel, take time off, like nothing else out there! It is lifetime learning! I also, love to be a part of the nursing community, for the most part, nurses are wonderful people. (Of course there are the exception, but the exception proves the rule...and there are dysfunctional work places...but in that case, you can leave).
You have found a great community here at Allnurses! I would continue to use it throughout this process. You will get great advice and support.
Good luck and have fun!!
:yeah: you can do it!!

Whatever you do, remember it WILL get better. Don't have a mental breakdown and want to not go back. Call someone, come on here, do whatever you have to do to let out what's bothering you. There's a few times I thought I couldn't go back but GO BACK. It will get better. Your classmates are wonderful when it comes to making it through and needing encouragement to go back!

Mindy is right. Nursing school is one big anxiety attack. Without good friends and family Im sure I would have left a long time ago. Use that support system and you can make it! Its a lot of hard work but so rewarding and makes you so so so proud of yourself. Its great!

Oh man.... I would LOVE to be a train conductor... I love trains...
Good luck to you! I wish I had your nerve to just quit and go. I always need about 4 backup plans before I even think about doing something.

As long as you are fully aware that it won't happen overnight, or in a week or a month, maybe not even in two years, then you're ready to go. I have been truddging along towards this career for a long time and I only have a year and a half left before I can take that exam. It's been sad, happy, scary, exciting, hardwork and fun. Best of luck to you as you start along your path.

I hope you're reading the numerous posts in this forum from nurses who hate the profession and hate the environment they work in, so that you have an idea of what you're in for.
