San Jacinto College ADN Fall 2011

Published

Just wanted to start a thread for the Fall 2011 SJC applicants to the ADN Program. I am eagerly awaiting the application period. Have any of you applied to other schools nearby?

I'm taking my test tomorrow and totally stressing out! I'm super worried about the A&P part, and a little worried about the vocab... If you've taken it recently, do u know if the vocab is mainly from the HESI study guide? There is SO much to remember from A&P... I took both I & II over a year ago and I don't remember too many details. Can anyone that has taken it, please, please, please tell/give me an idea of how indepth the questions are? Do I need to remember exactly how the sodium/potassium pump works? Do I need to know the EXACT functions of the systems? ATP? Cell functions? Aerobic/anaerobic resp??? I'm looking through all of my notes and I'm so overwhelmed :( I was supposed to dedicate this entire week to studying but I've had SO many distractions! 2 kids, a dog, and daddy is out of town.. I'm NOT looking for sympathy... just empathy and tips!! lol...thanks so much guys... oh and I will def try to remember what the test covers and post it on here so I can help the next person :)

Ok, here is what I can remember about A&P including some help I got from others:

  • Know the directional terms--like anterior vs posterior
  • Mitosis vs Meiosis
  • Layers of the the epidermis
  • Bones of the spine--cervical, thoracic, lumbar
  • Know ATP, myosin, actin, what causes us to be able to move our body parts....
  • Know difference between cerebellum and cerebrum.
  • Know about the medulla oblongata
  • Homeostasis
  • Pituitary gland=The Master Gland------know the lobes (posterior, anterior)
  • Which organ produces Insulin?---Pancreas
  • Which cells are phagocytic? (monocytes and neutrophils)
  • What is the result of CO2 in the body?
  • Which organ absorbs nutrients?
  • Villi vs cillia the roles
  • Female and male reproductive system.
  • Know Scientific names for animals and what each of the 2 names stand for (genus)---how should it be written (like capitalization, italics, etc.)
  • ADH & Collecting Tubules

  • Rough endoplasmic reticulum

  • Ulnar nerve and the dermis (skin structure)

GOOD LUCK :p

oh my goodness!! that's the MOST detailed info i've seen so far!!!! THANK YOU XTINA 1!!!!! That's gonna help so much :) ... now at least i have an idea of what areas to focus on. HUGE HELP!! not sure if i'll be able to retain all of it but i guess i'll see tomorrow....thanks again :)

LOL @ Mochachild :lol2:

Question...to apply for SJC ADN you are allowed one prereq to still be in progress but has anyone heard what your chances of getting accepted are in that situation? The nursing dept says they do not choose based solely on the rubric but if someone has a 4.0 prereq GPA and an A on the HESI and a decent GPA, does the fact that they are still working on one prereq have a huge impact on whether or not they get in? Anyone have any idea on this?

I spoke to a counselor at the South Campus about the exact same thing. She said that they do allow one prereq to be in progress at the time the application is submitted, but she recommended that I complete all prereqs BEFORE applying to boost my chances of not being denied anything. She pretty much was leaning towards me completing all prereqs before applying because she felt that the program is crazy competitive to get into and my chances of getting a call back would be based on a complete application, thats if they start splitting hairs. I was going to leave Micro for fall, but have since decided to take it during the Summer and complete it before I apply.

Ditto, chunky_munkey. Don't give the committee ammunition to toss your application out.

Greeeeat! There goes my stress level lol I sure which the nursing Dept would just bs straight with people when the ask questions. Just straight up say your chances are slim if you haven't finished all your prereqs. So I could've saved myself some $$ and stress. I asked them about this and they just said if you were accepted it would be contingent on passing your "in progress" class.

The admissions committee possibly factors in the completeness of the application as part of their decision making process, not totally sure, but it would make sense. I totally wanted to avoid a hairy situation and be caught in some gray area, so I opted to turn & burn this summer for my remaining prereqs. I mean there is the possibility of chucking out an application with courses "in progress" over an applicant who has a complete application with all the prereqs. The level of competition for a few spots is astronomical so its best to fulfill all their requirements.

As Mochachild said, "Don't give the committee ammunition to toss your application out."

Oh you guys totally make sense! But I was thinking, or rather hoping, that last semester would repeat itself. Idk if you've heard but they had to lower the grade on the HESI to 70% in order to fill the available spots. I was hoping if I had all A's in my prereqs and an A on my HESI then me finishing up my last class over the summer, before starting the program would be enough. Jokes on me I guess (but hopefully not). BUUUT I'm looking at NCLEX pass rates for 2010 and SJ only had a 70% pass rate. COM had a 96% pass rate. I wasn't planning on applying for the fall until I found out the app deadline was June 1 so I did not have a back up plan for fall if I did not get in but now I'm starting to rethink SJ now. Did any of you take the NCLEX pass rates into consideration when choosing your school?
