San Jacinto College ADN Fall 2009

Published

Hi everyone. Im wondering if any of you are planning on applying to San Jac ADN program or are in the program?

Lets talk about it here

It would be awesome if if they could charge it on financial aid...wishful thinking.

I am sooooo looking forward to tomorrow.

i am definitely not looking forward to sitting in a chair for 9 hours! i'm somewhat excited but only to get it out of the way, lol. i hope i won't be falling asleep. and i hope it goes by super duper fast!

Ok guys got a question that prolly will sound stupid....where exactly is orientation going to be? (bldg, room number). I took all my classes at south campus so I am not familiar with central at all and I don't want to be late in the morning frustrated with trying to find it. Pleez help! See everyone tomorrow. Thanks!!!!

If you know where the Health Science building is, it's in there. It'll be down in the foyer area with double doors. I'll do some searching for the room number and I'll edit this post with it.

*Edit* That was faster than I thought : D

It's Room 121. Very easy to see if you're in the "main" area (where the tables and the offices of each medical program are).

I don't know where the health science building is.....i know its sad. I've only been to the ILC and the bookstore.

It's not sad! There are lots of people I know who took most of their classes at south and aren't familiar with central.

The health science building is the easternmost building of the campus. If you find the student center (that's in the middle of the campus). If you walk directly east from there, you'll see a two-story building; that would be the health science building.

It's number 23 on that map. For some reason it's oriented all strange, but it's the same idea. Hope this helps, and don't be afraid to ask more about it. I'm sure that what I've just said is about the most confusing thing EVER : )

Thank you!!! You've been a big help to me. The first time I went to that campus I was confused, its either bigger than south or shaped funny. I know I will get used to it after awhile though. The adn office is in that bldg or in another? Just curious for when I drop my paperwork off.

No problem! I remember my first day going there, I was late for every one of my classes because I had no clue where the rooms were. I was also too ashamed to ask for help, heh.

But yeah, the ADN office will be in that little foyer area that I mentioned earlier. It's very close to where they're holding the orientation at, so that makes it easy and convenient.

Thanks again, a friend of mine was trying to explain it to me....said turn off of fairmont into the second light entrance and its by the ambulances...lol. Didn't get what she was talking about, but I'm sure I'll find it.

Ah yeah, didn't even think of it that way. The only problem with that is you can't turn directly where the ambulance is because it's an exit only. However, there is that entrance just before that point.

Though I have to wonder, will this get seen? Haha, oh well, I'm sure you'll find it either way.

Before I begin this long winded post, I just want to say it was nice to meet some of you today. Very nice to put faces to names. I am definitely going to enjoy working along with you guys!

Now to the meat!

I just finished reading the first chapter of our health assessment book (I'm not the only one I swear!) and thought I should share some information with you all about my own experience in assessing patients. I was in the EMT program this spring, and actually had to perform a skills exam on assessment (and when you read the book, it will be called an emergency assessment, though we did do the other 3 depending on the patient).

The biggest thing that got people at first was the fact that we had to touch each other in order to actually practice. Yes, it is a bit awkward, but it's just one of those things that we all have to get over so that we can become proficient in doing this. Ms. Jammer eluded to this during orientation today that assessment for us newbies takes a while to get through everything. I believe her because I've been there!

Another thing that I figured would be some useful knowledge to pass on was about clinicals. I don't know about you guys, but I remember my first clinical as a surgical technologist. I was bright-eyed and scared. Think deer in the headlights and that's about what my first day consisted of. Obviously it's a different beast in nursing, and I think this is a potentially difficult situation. The thing that we have to remember is, if you show the patient that you're confident, then life becomes easier. Especially when we may not know diddly about what to do for the patient, if we look like we do know, then they're none the wiser.

I know some of this stuff might seem obvious, but we're all about to undergo some serious stress, and stress can do funny things to a person. So I believe that if we remember this stuff throughout our first semester, we'll all see each other during the second, and subsequent, semesters. And I definitely want that to happen : D

Did everyone have fun printing the 172 pg study? I thought my printer was going to die.
