Samuel Merritt University ELMSN Fall 2021

Published

Hey All

I haven't yet seen a forum for this cohort yet and I wanted to start one! Applications are due soon and wanted to see how others are going along with the process and see if theres any advice or recommendations that anyone has. This could be with the application, interviews, pre-reqs, HESI, etc. I appreciate those who comment and add to the forum!

A little about me: originally from NYC moved out to Oakland in 2015. I worked in Urgent Care, and have volunteer work during Covid-19. Finishing up a few pre-reqs now and hopefully will have them done in time for the application due date Dec 1st. Let me know if there are any other questions for me, I am very interested to see the backgrounds of others who are also applying, its a stressful but exciting time for everyone! ?

P.S. if there is a forum for the Fall 2021 ELMSN program please link it!

Not sure why anyone would do that... it would seem more logical to get your BSN in nursing and then your NP through one of the bridge programs, if being a FNP is your actual goal.

Yeah I’ve heard of some people doing it though. I've heard nothing but good things about the CM program too. My friends in the FNP program have talked about it. A lot of the classes in both programs overlap as well. It almost takes the same amount of time as if you did a bridge program, but I guess it really depends what you’re interested in.

Yea I mean if you want to do both then go for it. I think CM and FNP are very different but it can be helpful to get that CM background bc case managing does help you get a bigger perspective towards patient care. I think people don't recommend it because the program is already very expensive and it would be a lot of money you would have to be putting into both programs but it is definitely possible if that's what you want to do.

Definitely agree on the money part.
I guess, it might be best to talk to people that work in both professions because they are fundamentally different. There is a lot of overlap in classes because everyone works towards the NCLEX and then there is some general understanding of patient care ... other than that your day to day operation is quite different. Not sure if you are looking for anyone’s opinion but personally I think a candidate would look stronger if you pursue a somewhat linear path that would either follow patient care of a nurse/FNP or the more nurse/CM trajectory. Talking to Anne at SMU can help porifice these questions out as well. Good luck

Totally unrelated but did anyone apply to the ABSN program in oakland? I haven't heard back and the program is set to start in may

just to go off what you mentioned here, it does seem like doing the CM first then FNP is like a round about way of going along. During the Nursing Success Seminar last year, I met someone who had applied to the FNP program a few times and were rejected, but they mentioned to me that they decided to apply CM because it was easier to get in. But IDK if that is true? SMU tends to be competitive regardless I feel, its not a lottery system which I greatly appreciate because it takes into account the entire student. We are all pretty competitive students to be chosen for 1/24 seats for either track.

I think what Im trying to say is, that someone told me they were going CM because they had be rejected from FNP already a few times (IDK if they ever got in for that year).

But from experience and working with DNPs and such that a lot of nurses who end up in administration/management even C level positions have tended to be CM - or some sort of management track.

Yeah. It wouldn’t make sense to get a masters in CM and then another masters for NP.

Haiii, Has anyone been accepted off the FNP waitlist??

Hi, the last day for us to submit our deposit and letter of intent is today, so it's very unlikely that anyone has been accepted off the waitlist yet.

Does anyone know how many people they typically take from the waitlist? I was denied for the NP Program but was offered to apply to the CM program. Now I’m on the waitlist for the CM program. The process of waiting is killing me!?

Based on previous years they usually take around 5 from the waitlist for FNP. I'm not sure how many they take for CM.

Hello! I officially declined  my acceptance this morning for the ELMSN-FNP program as I got into another program. ?good luck everyone!

In case it helps, this was second round applying to nursing schools. Don’t lose hope!

Has anyone gotten off the waitlist? or heard any updates about their place in the waitlist?
