I wanted to start this discussion for all applicants of the ABSN Summer 2018 cohorts at Samuel Merritt University. Please feel free to share your thoughts so we can support each other!
I would assume that you'd have to do another post masters program to become an NP if you decide on not pursuing a position in case management
Yes I agree with this. There are different focuses in MSNs from different programs that would allow you to be eligible for certain jobs/certification. Getting an ELM-FNP would allow you to get certification in Family Nurse Practitioner but not Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. Same with the CM route. If you would want to make a switch after getting that MSN, then you need to go to a post master's program which can range from 1-3 years. Some places like vanderbilt uni give post-master's certification in many NP specialties online within a year!
So in general. A Master's is required for anything above RN, AND there are different Master's focus for different certifications. The post master's programs help broaden whatever Master's focus you initially got.
As with BSN's they also have BSN to MSN programs, essentially the same thing as above, where having a BSN can get you to a master's with a certain certification focus; NP specialties, clinical nurse leader, clinical nurse specialist.
I feel like this push for nursing has made a lot of school come out with so many different bridge programs it makes applying and deciding your education/career path really confusing/complex.
I hope this helps
Should we start a Facebook group for our cohorts? Eg a Sf peninsula summer 2018 ABSN group? Also, I just signed up for the cpr training with the company they have a discount with, I'm doing it March 3 at Chinese hospital in sf, anyone else?!
