Samuel Merritt Uni- Spring 2011 BSN Transfer Applicants

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello everyone. I hope the semester is going well for all of you taking summer classes.

I decided to make this thread for those of us applying to SMU for the upcoming Spring 2011 BSN admission cycle. Who else is applying and wants to join me in the waiting game? :D

Thank you so much for all the help and encouragement! Nissan350z, I will call ASAP and see where I'm at and what I can do to apply. I do need to take the TEAS. The JC's I applied to didn't require it until I get accepted in the program. I'm very hopeful again. If I miss the deadline for Spring, I'll still try to get in the next app. period. At that time I can weigh my options and see what is best for me. I'm so happy I found this website. It has been such an encouragement to meet people in the same boat as I am or at least in similar waters. :) Nissan and IMurphy keep me posted on everything! :)

Hi Everyone,

So I got my summer grades and TEAS test results but I am currently taking four of the required pre-requesites this semester at Las Positas College and I am worried that it might prevent me from getting in. So far my pre-req. GPA is 3.52 and my TEAS was 88.8%. Anyone out there who has been accepted please let me know what you think. I honestly have all my eggs in Samuel Merritts basket. I don't want to go to school for two more years and still only have an AA. Also the job market is so hard for new grads that I feel like I need to have a BSN to maybe get hired. So this is me obsessing and worrying that I didn't get in and I am going to end up living at my parents house forever...lol. Caligirl96 have you talked to anyone yet?

Hey Laura,

From what I hear your TEAS score is pretty competitive, and your GPA is pretty good too. They only look at the last 60 units taken along with all the science prereqs (they take the GPA of just your science courses as well). The essay is pretty important as it's your chance to really sell yourself, and I've heard from students at Samuel Merritt that the cheesier your essay is, the better. People who get accepted usually don't have less than a 3.5 GPA and slightly higher GPA in the sciences (although it really depends on the current applicant pool, so you could be VERY competitive with your grades). I got an 88.9 on the TEAS and I have a 4.0 sciences and 3.97 overall (4.0 in the last 60 units). I'm still pretty nervous though cause I ended up not taking a chem class I would need to get into CSUEB and so it's either SMU or SF State (which is supposedly really hard to get into). You are definitely not alone in your worries! GOOD LUCK and I'm sure you'll get in!;)

First off, you really do not need to make a counseling appt...do the drop in option. You can get your transcripts evaluated doing this at that time. Secondly, the program is expensive, but Summit offered my friend who started this fall semester to pay a chunk of the money ($30,000???) in tuition if you agree to work for them for 3 years after you graduate. Thirdly, you can also apply for the preceptor program your senior year and work as a student nurse during the summer! Another of my friends who just started her senior year at SMU, did that this summer and now has a job when she graduates in May. Also, the hospital wants her to work during winter break!!!

I have dreamed of going to SMU for so long and still want to do it, but right now I am going to finish my LVN and then go to SMU to obtain my BSN.

I also have another friend who volunteered at Summitt Hospital while completing his prereq's and the director of nursing there wrote his letter of recommendation for his application to SMU. He was also offered a position at the hospital when he finishes school...so yes, he got in (with a 3.0 GPA, and a 88% on the TEAS) for the fall 2010 semester...

So, there are three people that I know that were accepted to the program with all different types of situations so that should not discourage you form not applying because of the cost or GPA.

Best of luck to all of you on your journey! :nurse:

hey guys! I am at one of the partnership schools ( if you don't know about them look them up on the SMU website) Anyway, I wanted you guys not to worry so much about getting in. First, there are people at my school who can't get the minimum scores to pass the TEAS. Which means that there are more positions open to JC transfer students each semester. So, just hang in there and do your best! If you want to be a nurse some how some there will be a way.:)

Good Luck to you all and hope to see you guys in the Spring 2011!

So its getting close to finding out if we got in or not...from last years posts it looks like the first week of November is when we should find out. I will keep you all posted and if you can keep me posted too that would be great. Its been a long waiting game! Good luck to all of you!!

Sooo nervous but so excited! Hopefully we will all know by the end of this week! Eee!!

By the way, has anyone received a confirmation from SMU regarding the successful arrival of their application? They used to send an email, but I'm wondering now that it's all computerized if they don't bother with that anymore.

I have emailed and left messages to confirm that my application was even received. I have had no correspondence back. I have heard that it is hard to communicate with SMU, so I am just assuming everything is okay...

Same here, it's comforting to know I'm not alone, thanks for the fast reply!

Hi all it has been a long time since I wrote on here. I go to one of the partnership schools and the admissions director came to my school a few weeks ago. Said that we would probably know if we got in the second week of November because she is going on vacation. Also, if you are applying from a junior college you might not find out you got in until after grades are posted in December. They hold positions for people at the partnership schools first. If there are people at the partnership schools who didn't pass there classes then there are more positions open for JC transfer students. I hope this is not the case and we all get our acceptance letters sooner rather than letter.

Good luck to you all!!!!

Wow I didn't think there would be many people from the 2+2 going for spring entry. I was under the impression it was easier for JC transfer students to get in during the spring because most partnership school students apply during the fall but a few have to wait until spring due to failed classes or unacceptable TEAS results. I've heard this from many spring entry students at SMU. Now I'm a little stressed.:uhoh3:
