Hello everyone. I hope the semester is going well for all of you taking summer classes.
I decided to make this thread for those of us applying to SMU for the upcoming Spring 2011 BSN admission cycle. Who else is applying and wants to join me in the waiting game?

Hi Everyone,
I have applied but haven't received my TEAS test scores yet and am a little concerned about my prerequisite GPA being lower than 3.5. I took alot of my prerequisites 12 years ago when I was 19 and not concerned about grades so although I have maintained a 3.9 since I have been back to school some of my older pre-requisites are B's and one C. Anyway I really hope to get in. I am still taking classes this semester but if I could start in Spring with no lag time I would be ecstatic! Good luck everyone.

Hang in there! I know that you can do it. Just focus on your classes this semester. If you dwell to much on the future you stress yourself out (I know I do). Keep in touch throughout the semester. Even it is to vent your worries and frustrations. Good Luck!

Don't worry, you'll be fine! You have a very good gpa and your pre-req gpa isn't bad either. There's more to admission than just gpa and test scores; they look at your rec letter and overall performance and improvement just aheavily. I was told they accept more students in the spring semester anyway. Try not to worry and think positive...We're here to help you every step of the way. Good luck this semester!
Hey Everyone, Thanks for the encouragement!! I know that all I can do is the best I can and whatever is supposed to happen will happen. I just fell in love with the idea of 4 semesters to a bachelors instead of to an Associates. I also think that with graduate nurses having a hard time finding jobs in the bay area, trying to make a good impression during the preceptorship and clinicals and get hired because of my enthusiasm and performance would be ideal....a girl can hope...:) Hope you all have a fabulous weekend!!

Hi! I would have loved to have gone to Samuel Meritt but it was way out of my price range. I have been applying since Fall 2009 to junior college ADN programs all over the bay area with no luck of getting in yet. It's a little frustrating and plus the fact once we graduate, jobs are scarce right now. I wish you all the best! And eventually I'll get there too! :)
Hey CaliGirl! I suggest you apply to SMU anyway. I know it's very costly but you'll be able to make it up in a year once you get your job. I heard they are pretty generous when it comes to student loans as well. What cc programs will you be applying to? I'm thinking of applying Chabot and Ohlone since both of them are close to my house. You're right about the job market though, it's pretty difficult for a new grad to find a job here in the bay area and there's already lots of experienced/foreign nurses. I'm sure we'll eventually find a job though! I wish you the best of luck getting in!
Hi Nissan! I don't think I qualify for SMU because my GPA is a little too low. I have a GPA of 3.0 in my pre-req. courses and I have a repeat for one of the classes. I was working 50+ hours a week while taking those classes at De Anza. I know, no excuse but it was hard to pull off that. I regret I didn't take my grades more seriously. I've applied to Evergreen Valley College, College of San Mateo, De Anza and Cabrillo College last year but did not get in because of limited spots. Cabrillo College is the only one with a waitlist and I'm willing to drive from San Jose to Aptos just to get in the program. But it's at least a 2 year waitlish. This year I'm applying to all the above plus Chabot and Ohlone. I missed the deadline last year so I couldn't apply. I'm hoping all this is worth the wait. I don't want to get more discouraged than I already am. I'm almost 32 and my boyfriend is talking about marriage and kids now! Yikes! How am I going to do that with being in the nursing program in the future! You are young still and on the right track! Good luck!
Hi Caligirl96,
You should still try to apply to SMU, from what I understand it is a program that works with us adult college students who have some life and work experience. I'm almost 32 also and last night at dinner my boyfriend started talking about trying to get pregnant soon lol! Life has a funny way of working out, hopefully you'll get in very soon! SMU financial aid is helpful, I'm going to be paying on my loans, (if I get in), for years to come. Have u taken your teas already? You can take it twice, so study the book to death and go get an awesome score!
Hi imurphy77! Thanks for replying back! You know exactly how I feel then. You made me realize I should keep all my options open. I'm going to give SMU a call next week and set up an appointment with a counselor. There's no harm in that right? The hard work will pay off for you and hopefully me too. :) Good luck and keep me posted on current events! :)
Try to schedule an appointment with the admissions counselor for the BSN program. Take a copy of your unofficial transcripts so she can go over them and tell you if there are any classes left for you to take. I believe the deadline for Spring is September 1st but they still accept applications after that. Give them a call and let us know what they say.
Also, don't worry about your gpa and the course repeat. The fact that you were working 50+ hours a week while going to school is more than enough to show them that you're a dedicated and hardworking person. I wouldn't worry too much about admission, I'm sure you'll get in. Definitely talk to your boyfriend about the marriage issue though- I'm sure he'll understand! Almost everyone I know that goes to SMU is married or has other responsibilities and they tell me the program is still doable as long as you prioritize your schedule.
Have you taken the teas test? You can take it twice to improve your score if you don't do so well the first time around. I'm not in the best financial situation either but I'm sure we'll be able to pay off our loans once we start working. Don't let the cost discourage you from applying.
Apply and let us know what happens. Hope to see you next semester! =)
