Hello! I just wanted to make a thread specifically for those who are applying to the Samuel Merritt ABSN for a spring 2017 start. I'm applying to start in April 2017. It's the only program I'm applying to, as I can't afford more than a year without an income and I really want a BSN and not an MSN at this time. I'm done with my application, just waiting for nursing CAS to verify all my transcripts before I click submit! Currently working full time and taking my last 3 pre recs online. What about you?
Congrats to those who got in, and hopefully that waitlist will open up for those of you on there! I'm a little scared about the whole student loan situation. What are your guys plans for loans? I have never had any private loans before. To those who know people in the program, are they liking it?
I know two women who have gone thru the program. Both were very happy they did. One of them did say tho that she was working with nurses who went to Cal State, they were doing the same job and getting the same pay, but my friend was drowning in debt, and her co-worker wasn't. Other than that tho (!), she really liked it: )
My husband and I are dipping into retirement to pay for it- that and loans.
I'm sorry- I didn't mean to scare you! Everyone's circumstances are different. She had just gone thru a divorce, had to get a new place and had two kids to raise on her own. But bottom line, she's still really glad she did it. Nurses in this area make more money than elsewhere in the country, so if you stay local, I'm sure you'll be able to pay things back in a timely manner. She also LOVES HER JOB! Sorry again for scaring you.
You guys will be fine- I took out a bunch of loans for law school and I have spent my whole career representing the little guy, i.e. Making no money :). It all worked out fine you can pay over a long period of time. I will make more as a nurse here in the Bay Area and so I am willing to take out more loans for my dream career.
And for anyone that didn't see before I am unable to take my April 2017 spot so it is released and will presumably be going to someone on the waitlist, and will start the program next year instead. Good luck everyone!
