Hey everyone,
I know this is early, but the application period for the fall Sacramento and San Mateo cohort will soon be here! This might be the first thread. Anyway, application deadline isn't until April, but if people could post their past and current GPA's and their HESI test scores so I can get idea of what the pool of applicants is like. It is so hard to tell what a good application is for every application period.
My last 60 units GPA 3.9
Science GPA 3.1 (Maybe 3.5 if I can submit my new chemistry class that ends May 4th -- hopefully with a grade A in May).
HESI scores -- taking in February and in March -- if I have to retake it.
Working as an EMT for 7 months.
No volunteer experience.
Hi Moojoo, I have 2 prereqs in progress but the SMU email I received did not ask about any incomplete prerequisites. In my experience, SMU is not the best with replying to e-mails (or answering the phone), but you probably have a better shot getting a response by phone, especially considering the deadline they gave you. Please let us know if you find anything out!
They sent me an email saying "Thank you for the application update. Your file has been reviewed and sent on to the faculty for the next phase in the review process."
whew...??? hahaha
Hello everyone!
I applied this round for San Mateo as my main choice. I am currently waitlisted for their MSN- case management program so I am praying that I will get into either, I most likely will choose the ABSN if I get in though.
I have a question about the pharmacology and pathophysiology prerequisites!!! For those of you who completed them online at SBCC did you have to take BMS 146 - Human Form And Function first??? How did you go about registering? I have emailed so many people and I am running in circles trying to find answers and help PLEASE any info will help, Im going nuts!
The prerequisite classes for Patho and Pharm at SBCC are Human Anatomy with Lab and Human Physiology with Lab (4 units each) with at least a C. You need to get your transcripts to the school early because it takes a few weeks for them to release the hold preventing you from registering.
Also, these classes fill up fast and are very difficult once you're in so you absolutely must study.
Unless you're paying ca$h you will undoubtedly need to take out a private loan for this school given the cost of the program.
The maximum government aid you can take out is around $54,000. The tuition alone at SMu is over $75,000.
Check nerdwallet.com on information on private loans.
So if accepted, does anyone have idea how they plan to finance? If I'm accepted, I'm thinking parent plus loans and Sally Mae loans. So much $$$
I just was able to register for the online SBCC classes today. I was enrolled in them through UCB extension and quickly regretted it. Can anyone speak to differences in difficulty between the two?
@goldenbsn when you say they're very difficult, is it just because there's so much material crammed into 6 weeks? Is it really that bad when you take them one at a time? Thanks in advance!

You are correct, it is a ton of material crammed into six weeks. It's not impossible to get an A, just know that you'll be reading up to 100 pages in the book per week and going over up to 200 PowerPoint slides on the most busy chapters, and tested on all of it. I've found Quizlet to be super helpful, you just need to be smart with your time and treat it like a full time job :).
I'm enrolled in both right now, I will finish in three weeks. I find Patho to be more difficult than Pharm, but at the same time both classes are so interesting. It's the basic fundamentals of working as a nurse and all the nurses I've spoken to say that once you get into clinical, Patho becomes your favorite class.
I found that some of the practice questions for some of these teachers are on quizlet, which are then sometimes on the actual quiz. I still do the reading, but it makes passing the quizzes and what to expect from them that much easier. It is crazy how much reading you have to do with little guidance on what to expect on the weekly quizzes from the teachers. It is also a little ridiculous that some of these teachers take their questions from quizlet. Regardless, as long as you learning something from the reading and passing the class with at least a B, you should be fine.
Thank you both, @goldenbsn and @Btenjamin! I appreciate the advice. Especially about quizlet, that's great to know--quizlet has saved me many times! I'm hoping despite the extremely accelerated nature of the class, it is still a more pleasant experience than Berkeley extension. It will definitely be exciting to learn about concepts in both classes that are totally applicable to nursing (beyond basic anatomy and physio).
UGH this last month before we'll probably hear back is going to go by SO SLOWLY...

Yep, planning on just living on student loans. Hooray! lol.
Also, I know it's not time yet to get admission decision emails, but I've already gotten in the habit of checking multiple times a day, ugh, lol. I'm so anxious to find out!!!
