Hey everyone,
I know this is early, but the application period for the fall Sacramento and San Mateo cohort will soon be here! This might be the first thread. Anyway, application deadline isn't until April, but if people could post their past and current GPA's and their HESI test scores so I can get idea of what the pool of applicants is like. It is so hard to tell what a good application is for every application period.
My last 60 units GPA 3.9
Science GPA 3.1 (Maybe 3.5 if I can submit my new chemistry class that ends May 4th -- hopefully with a grade A in May).
HESI scores -- taking in February and in March -- if I have to retake it.
Working as an EMT for 7 months.
No volunteer experience.
Hey vrjc1092,That's kind of weird SMU wants transcripts sent directly to them. When I took the NursingCAS instructional class at SMU they said to update the application once your classes are finished. So you'd think you have to send your transcript to them (NursingCAS) too. Hmm..
@kellyj531 hey! I went to the NursingCAS class also and I couldn't remember what they said about it...I looked at previous forums and I THINK i remember seeing that other students said they sent them directly to SMU. Now I'm kind of nervous. The person I spoke with on the phone said to send them straight to SMU but if you remember differently that makes me nervous lol has anyone else tried contacting them about this?
I'm thinking they want it sent directly to them in order to expedite the process?

Hm yea that would make sense. My in process classes "end" on May 25, and probably won't have official grades for a week or so, so if we get acceptances on May 25 I guess I'll worry about it then!
ER would be so exciting and interesting! When I did an overnight observational shift in the ER once for my EMT class, the nurses were so impressive and awesome. I am not really sure what I want to specialize in as a nurse, but probably something with the pediatric population. My mom is a NICU nurse though and she loves that, so maybe I'll end up there.
Also YES I think I have read all of the forums for the past few years, haha
I would like to go into oncology. Many years ago, I was admitted as an oncology patient, so I understand the hindrance/stress coming from a patient's perspective. The medical team, nurses especially, have been awesome in treating me and listening to my concerns. This inspired me to pursue nursing and serve as an advocate. I'm proud to be a survivor (and going strong) and I hope I can inspire those in need.
Another field I'm interested in is pediatrics. I have worked with kids/teens for 5 years in a teaching environment. Every learning moment with them is precious and seeing them smile/succeed in their goals is very rewarding to me.
Hey goldenbsn, I met with a financial aid counselor at SMU about paying for the ABSN and they showed me that since we already have our bachelors, the max gov. aid was about $12k a semester and only 2 or 3 times for that year (I forget how many). I'm not positive we're talking about the same thing because taking out loans and receiving financial aid is kinda foreign to me, but that's what I remember from my conversation with them!
Hey,
We are taking about something similar :).
You are correct, since all of us already have a bachelor's degree, the maximum government loans per semester equal $12,000. However, and that's a big however, the maximum amount of loans you can have out from the government at any given time is $54,000. So, you must look at what you already owe (if any). For example, let's say you currently owe $40,000 for your first degree in government loans. The maximum you can get would be $14,000 which would likely equal $12,000 for the first semester and $2,000 for the second semester, then the rest must be taken out in private loans.
Hope that adds some clarification :).
Here is a link to the ABSN 2018-2019 calendar. It looks like there are 3 semesters.
