is it safe to go to school in memphis?

I wanted to check out options in tennessee before I decided to go out of state for nursing school.

I'm not from Memphis but I wish someone would give you a straight answer.

If someone asked about my city (Birmingham, AL) I would tell you about every neighborhood, shopping area, club, gas station, and college to avoid.

Here a hint: greatschool.org.

Most crappy/dangerous neighborhoods have school with poor test scores. Put in a zip code and start scouting. Also check out rental listings. If it says Section 8 welcomed avoid it.

You so silly :)

I'm sorry. I know it was not helpful, but it was the first thing that popped into my head.

I'm in Memphis, if you have specific questions please feel free to message me.

Thanks

I thought several of us did give her a straight answer. It has been my experience that some nicer areas accept Section 8. I know several "good" suburbs where you can get almost as many drugs there as you get at the hospital.

i mean job security and personal security. ive seen so much on the first 48 that i wouldnt spend more than a few hours there yet i hearthe nursing school is good there, i wonder if the job market is better in nashville or memphis for nurses?

I totally agree... I'm in the Dallas area and tons of people try to live in Highland Park/University Park thinking it will always be safe and nothing bad ever happens there, and that's not the case. The only person who can ensure your personal safety is you so just make sure you are cautious, no matter where you are, especially if you're alone! :)

Of course it's safe to go to school in Memphis. There are good parts of town & bad parents of town, just like any other area. I live there but recently transferred to school in Jonesboro AR. Considering going back after school b/c apparently the pay is better. I'm not sure yet though. My parents still live there, so it's still my home. I still use the address for everything.

Anyway, I lived there for about 15 years and I'm still alive. It kinda ticks me off with people talk about how bad it is there. Yeah, there are dangerous areas... But you dont just wake up one morning & decide to go hang out there, do you? Of course not. Just be careful, as you normally would.

I'm not quite sure which would be better, but they are both big cities.

And which nursing school are you referring to? University of Memphis? Southwest? Tennessee Tech? Baptist College of Health Sciences? Theres quite a few nursing schools there.

I knew it was The First 48! I heard the city of Memphis was not very happy about the perception the show makes on the entire city. As I said earlier, definitely talk to some people who live there about their personal opinions on schools and areas. I wouldn't rely on statistics. Maybe you could check out the Tennessee Nursing Forum on here!
