Sad day for a want to be experienced RN =...(

I've never posted on a forum before but have truly enjoyed the support from this website by reading posts! I recieved my RN licence in California in 2009 after looking for a job for 4 months and applying everywhere I did what many do an put in a year and a half at a skilled nursing facility. I loved working at a SNIF, but really my heart was/is set on acute care! So I looked for jobs once again all over California for hours stretching into months (where so many nurses have been and can feel my pain) until one day I broke and decided I will apply out of state. So I did and I applied everywhere.

Finally, after much more aggravation and finding many states in the same place as Ca; I GOT A JOB in South Florida in a med-surge position and An AWESOME NURSE SPECIALTY PROGRAM wow what a break I had you could imagine my excitement! Finally, I get to start my career I have worked so hard for! 3 months to prepare, Interview done, stuff packed and sold, 30 day notice for apt completed, job quit, florida license received a cost of $300 dollars when all said and done, dates for orientation, dates for start, preceptor in place, ACLS class in place, Basic Arrhythimias ect ect. Tickets paid for and in hand and ready to sign a lease the day I get there (June 20th) with a going away party of 50 people this weekend to boot!

Sadly, I am told today "I'm sorry we had budget cuts and the nurse specialty program has been placed on hold, I will send you a list of hospitals in the area if you still want to try and apply in Florida"

Wow..... my heart is broken, dreams smashed, hopelessness sets in and if I didn't feel shutdown and discouraged for the past two yrs I definatly am sure feeling it NOW :crying2:

Do you have a written job offer? If so, have you considered legal action?

There is no legal action. come on.

How awful Op. I read more and more that relocating is so iffy these days for new nurses. It's like throwing your money and time away at a casino slot machine.

Oh my gosh, I am so sorry you're going through this! I can imagine your frustration, especially with all the money involved and all the time put into relocating across the country. Your chance will come! :hug:

Um if the OP had a job offer in writing, which is sounds as if she might of, she absolutely would have a right to legal action.

Also, if a new grad is someplace like CA where there are practically no job, it would be stupid for them NOT to consider jobs elsewhere in the country. You just don't move until you have a written offer with a start date.

Look. This is healthcare employment down and dirty where just about anything goes. I've got 20+ years corporate biz experience. If you don't already know, here's telling you that things are not done professionally where nurses are concerned.

thank you for shaing. this is a good place to come to for support. i am sorry you had such a heart breaking experience. it seems that a career in nursing is full of ups and downs. for example, new grads seem to play a lottery after graduation. some will hit the jackpot due to luck and have good employment opportunities in-line with his/her career goals while most will not. in any case, once you have a chance to properly grieve your loss, do not give up!!

in fact if you have not already done so and are still willing to move, you may want to look at employment in minot, nd because they are desperate to hire new grads. in other words, given your work experience i suspect that you will be greatly appreciated in the acute care setting!

on the other hand, i have read that housing is in short supply. therefore, contact the hospitals and see if they are willing to pay for relocation and help you with finding housing. good luck and be sure to keep us posted. something positive will come up.:up:

That is so heart-breaking. I had this happen to a girlfriend that got a job in an LA-area hospital so it can happen anywhere. About the legality of what they did-unfortunately with new grads because we are entering training/orienting positions its not the same as offered experienced nurses. They have us sign contracts that say that anytime in the first 60, 90, or 120 days they can fire us for any reason with no recourse or they can dissolve the training program. I held my breath hard for those 120 days. So they can dissolve the program at anytime or fire you at anytime with no explanation or no recourse basically. It makes life as a new grad incredibly distressing. You're pinning all your hopes, dreams, and saving on the fact that your new grad program will remain solvent in the recession and that you won't be let go. If it makes you feel any better we are all in it together and we are all feeling the stress and pain of this.

The best I can do is say how incredibly sorry I am. This was certainly undeserved and just incredibly short-sided of that hospital. I am impressed with your fortitude and willingness to go anywhere for that all important first job. I moved away, thousands of miles away, and spent a lot of money to move for my first job and I was incredibly lucky, it worked out. And I think it could work for you to. I hope that an even better job comes your way. You certainly deserve it. (Feel free to send me a private message and I will let you in on where I work. Extremely new grad friendly, the program isn't going anywhere anytime soon, and my unit alone hired 8 new grads for the summer so they are definitely hiring, and they give you money for relocation and pay for moving expenses, but they do fire within those first 120 days if you're not a good fit, we lost one that way). I wish you all the luck in the world and hope that you can put this awful experience behind you and mov eon the bigger and better things!!!

No need to get snippy. The fact of the matter remains, if there is a contract in place and it was broken, there are legal grounds to bring suit. Just because a lot of times people allow themselves to be taken advantage of, dies not mean that someone who wants to stand up for his/her rights has no case.
