Sacramento State (CSUS) Fall 2015 applications

Published

Hi everyone,

My name is Daniel and I just wanted to create this thread so everyone applying to Sac State can share their scores and post any questions they may have.

Ill start!

Pre +Co requisite GPA: 3.92

TEAS Score: 88.0%

Optional Criteria: 6

Overall app score: 78

I am planning to retake the TEAS exam in order to, hopefully, get a higher score!

Hi Keen Observer,

I have read this whole thread and noticed we have applied to the same schools!

Now I am left to chose between SF State and Sac State. Just like you, I am leaning toward Sac state, mostly for financial reasons. Can I ask you if you have any other reasons for attending Sac State?

Hi all!

Do any of you know what the typical class schedule is for the first semester? Or would any Sac State nursing student be willing to share their schedule?

This is from my daughter:

I'm a current sac state nursing student in my second semester. The first semester was CRAZY schedule wise, and it never gets that much better. You usually don't even know what time class is going to be until the night before because it changes SO much. Also, your schedule is different depending on your section.

My specific schedule was (with GREAT variation):

Monday: n112 (class)from 0800/1100 then hospital to prep, then go home and finish your prep until like midnight

Tuesday: hospital from 0630-1500

Wednesday: lab from 8-4ish.

Thursday: sim lab various hours and N111 (class) from 1530-1800

Friday: off! But of course... You're not really off...

some people had Wednesday "off" and Friday lab.

Hope this helps!

Wow, sounds intense! I didn't even realize the program was considered an accelerated program til the e-mail mentioned it. It's a bit intimidating but I'm still excited!

Also, when you say there was a lot of variation, do you mean the times were often shorter/longer than scheduled or just moved around time-wise?

reason to go to sac

CSUS nursing program has a higher passing rate of NCLEX

housing is cheaper in Sac

reason to go to sf

definitely more job opportunities in the bay

sf nursing program normally receives more application, therefore it is more competitive to get in.

I got in Stanislaus, SF, and Sac. Deciding between SF and Sac but favoring SF. good luck, cant wait to see all of you :)

All of that. There was a basic schedule, but anything could change...longer, different days, times, etc.

sl_94... This is in response to your question about what was different in the schedules. Sorry I didn't hit "quote"!

Thanks for the info. It helps me get an idea of how busy my schedule might be or.... how little sleep I will get.

I love sleeping. LOL:yes::rolleyes:

Hi Anais-B,

Congrats on your acceptance to SF State and Sac State nursing. I was impressed with the new facilities at Folsom Hall, and with what appeared to be the most well presented nursing advisory session of all of the CSU advisory sessions I attended (CSU East Bay, SF State, Chico State being the others).

Also, I'm not sure with what SF State replaced their preceptorship program. I've heard instead of following one nurse during the preceptorship, students will be following a couple (i.e. so they can still attend clinical incase the nurse calls out). The new program may end up being great in the end, but I don't want to be a test subject for the new program. There's also smoke about SF State U having trouble with their accreditation, so there's that.

I, too, would like to work in the Bay Area immediately after graduating, and going to a Bay Area school certainly gives you a greater opportunity to do just that, but after seeing how saturated even the Bay is with nurses, I'm sort of resigned to moving out of the area (or state) to get my first job experience. I don't want to potentially sit around for six months to a year before I land my first job.

Thanks for the info jlinnrdh! It's so helpful! I wonder why this kind of info is not available on the nursing school website. Maybe they don't want to scare us just yet!

I'm sure the program at SF State is fine. Besides, a BSN is still better than no BSN at all.

I hear you Keen Observer. I feel like it may be best to start outside of the Bay Area, get a job there for a few years and apply in the Bay Area once I have some experience. Non-nurses I have talked to tell me I shouldn't worry about that yet, that things may change, but it seems extremely important to me. As you said, I wouldn't want to have to wait 6 months to a year to get a job.

I am going to go see the nursing school on Tuesday, and visit Sacramento with my boyfriend. I am hoping this makes my choice less difficult.

May I ask you where you heard about SF State's accreditation problem?

I remember reading about it somewhere on this forum, and from a friend who is an engineering student at SFSU mentioning something about it, but nothing concrete. Take it with a large grain of salt. This is all I could dig up after a quick google search: http://www.ctc.ca.gov/educator-prep/coa-agendas/2010-01/2010-01-item-14.pdf

While you're visiting Sac, if you have time, I suggest also checking out Midtown. There's lots of good restaurants, bars, boutiques, etc; fun place to walk around. From the campus, take J street west, to the west side of Business 80.
