I kept my family completely in the dark with my patient as my patient is a family friend and was only supposed to be a short stay admission. Now both parties are confused as to why I was so stringent on confidentiality. Did I do the right thing? FYI I work at a rural hospital.

Yes-you did your job. The family friend/patient could have easily notified your family. You can be dismissed for confidentiality violations.

Yes. I am an NP and I have an extended family member who comes to the practice I work at. I never even mention it to other family members when I see them in the waiting room for an appointment. You absolutley did the right thing.
