RPNS - income taxes

Published

Does anyone from Ontario RPN know what to claim on your income taxes? I heard one is your union (if you have one). Anything else? Thanks!

Union dues

Professional registration fees

That's about it.

Your T4 slip has instructions printed right on it where to put the various amounts on your tax form. If you wrote your registration exam this taxation year, you can claim the fee but not the HST on it. You cannot claim uniforms, shoes, stethoscopes, reference materials, parking or any other expenses involved in doing your job.

Directly from the Canada Revenue Agency website:

[h=3]Note[/h]Most employees cannot claim employment expenses. You cannot deduct the cost of travel to and from work, or other expenses, such as most tools and clothing.

Employment Expenses 2013

You can deduct parking costs related to earning your employment income as long as you meet all the conditions listed in the section called Allowable motor vehicle expenses (including capital cost allowance). Generally however, you cannot deduct the cost of parking at your employer's office, such as monthly or daily parking fees or the cost of traffic infractions such as speeding tickets. These are all personal costs.

Do not include parking costs as part of your allowable motor vehicle expenses. Enter them on the "Parking" line on Form T777.

Special clothing and tools – You cannot deduct the cost of special clothing you wear or have to wear for your work. Also, you cannot deduct the cost of any tools that are considered to be equipment. However, if you are a tradesperson (including an apprentice mechanic) as described in Chapter 7, you may be able to deduct the cost of eligible tools you bought to earn employment income as a tradesperson.

How?

I usually just, erm, acquire my pens from banks, hotels, and patients who forget theirs.

My friend claimed a package of pens on her taxes last year! She gave them the reciept. I also tend to... Acquire ... My pens from various locations but I did buy some last year and saved the receipt just to try it!

My pens always go missing.

We're veering a little off-topic here... But before we resume our previously scheduled discussion - I use allnurses.com pens. I have a box full of them and happily share them with anyone who wants one.

I know where you work, oh wise and wonderful Mod!
