rose state college..advice anything you can give to help

Published

Hi. I am on a 2 year track to getting my associates in science. I want to further that with a bsn but i think since we are military i am going to get my RN license first with a associates then move on to my bsn. Here is the thing though i am just starting it this summer. I am taking 4 internet courses and then taking actual classes in the fall. I hope to be able to get all my pre reqs done to apply for their nursing program the following fall or spring, whenever it opens up to. I am really pushing with this.

What are their requirements to get accepted? What do you need? I have my CNA license already. I am not sure if that will help me or not. I struggle with dyslexia and dysgraphia and was always told things in life would be hard, in fact my parents never made me push for anything and they would always talk me out of hard stuff. In fact they are doing it to me now with nursing. I struggle with this everyday and i know i can do it but i just fear that i won't be able to get in with how hard i have to work at things.:crying2: Do you think it will be possible for me to get accepted eventually? I know i know i shouldn't be so hard on myself but its really hard when everyone expects you to fail. I have always wanted to be a nurse..always. I don't know why i am self doubting now. taking that first step to apply for admission and take the compass was hard but i did it.

Any advice to give would be greatly appreciated. thank you!

oh and i have yet to meet with a advisor. I meet with him on the 5th so i am don't even know what i got on my compass tests yet. Shoot i don't even know if they'll take a student into the program with such learning disabilities? will they?

Hi so i wanted to tell you that you can do anything that you put your mind to! i Am a 24 year old male that had the same problem if not worst then you and i became a LVN in San Diego cali. at a community college that was 100% pass rate and it was so hard but i did it! Now im packing my bags and moving to tulsa next summer in hopes to get into a LPN-BSN program at OU. So you can do it dont say you cant and dont think you cant ok. Best of luck and keep your head high!

The directors of the nursing program at Rose State would be best suited to answer this question.

I visited Rose State's website ( http://www.rose.edu/about/ ), but it provided no information on the requirements for admission into the nursing program.

I attend RSC as well but have not applied to nursing program yet so not sure how much help I can be. Not sure about your learning disability question, but you should know the scores of your COMPASS placements exams. The results are on the sheet of paper the testing center gives to you immediately after completing it. If you did not get it, go to admission office and ask for a copy of your scores or you can look them up on OASIS (online)As far as admission, I went to an info session they had about a month or so ago. The program director spoke and what I took from it is the program is based only on a point system. You get so many points for compass scored, gpa, healthcare experience and so on. I think you can download an actual application off the rose website. I do know it is a competitive program, but if it is what you want to do, then go for it. :)

I just started the RN program a few months ago in January at Rose. I can tell you that if you take the compass tests, you get the results right after you finish. Strange they didn't give you yours. Acceptance into the program depends on a points system. The more points you have the better chance you have at getting in your first try. There are 144 points possible, and the cut of this time I believe was 135. I may be a point or two off but that's close.

Acceptance is very competitive. I had a perfect score on the reading, writing, and a 86 on the math. The highest you can get is a 99% on each test. The higher the score the more points they award you toward your total. All this information is on the Rose website under nursing.

You will want to keep your GPA above a 3.00 if possible, have all your pre-req's done, and get as high of compass scores as possible. Be careful about the tests though. You can only take the compass twice per semester. So my advice is to take it first, then take your comp 1 and 2, and a pre-algebra class to prepare you for it a second time.

By the way, I had a really hard time getting anyone to talk to me. Especially the instructors and nursing adviser. Your best bet is to go out there and talk to the nursing students. That's what I did and they were way more helpful. I think they have so many people calling up there and trying to see someone that they just refer you to the info packet.

Try to go a little easy on the class load at first so you can get better grades and maintain a higher GPA. It will pay off in the long run. Take comp 1 , A&P, and maybe psych first, then increase your hours as you go. I know 2 people who tried to take 15 hours of pre-req's and made B's and C's which are OK, but not good if you're trying to get into the program. Most of my class have very few B's. I can also tell you that you will need to be at least in the high 120's to be competitive during selection.

It is a very good program. I love it so far. We have a lot of fun, the new building is awesome and the instructors are wonderful. Download the information packet. Make a list of the pre-requisites. There are 9 total and check them off as you finish them. If your reading and writing compass scores are low, get a tutor or start with some remedial courses to start from scratch. Also if your math score is low, take a summer pre-algebra class. I did but my instructor sucked so I dropped it and used the book to teach myself in three weeks. I was out school for 20 years before I went back. I went slow, and tried very hard. So if I can do it, anyone can.

Good luck with it. Don't give up. Put studying first, everything else second. If you have any other questions feel free to PM me or email me. Glad to help.

I'll be graduating from Rose next week!!!

In terms of requirements, Rose has lower req's for sciences (I believe chemistry is still not required, and there isn't a math req) compared to other 2-yr programs in this area, but its still competitive from what I understand.

The program is ok. Honestly, its a bit chaotic and disorganized and, as in all programs, I know several people who got screwed over by some policy or another. I think thats sort of par for the course though. I've been a bit disappointed simply because I've wanted to be an RN since I was a kid, and I expected it to be more challenging. LPN school was much harder than Rose's program. I think its all in the expectation though because we do have quite a few people who've failed out, or are about to going into the final, but I've done just fine and have barely studied at all.

One major disadvantage that I've uncovered is that Rose doesn't have a "leadership" portion of their 4th semester. This is a time when typically a student picks a facility, is assigned a preceptor, and really gets to do a lot of the nursing role. Its almost like orienting as a new grad. The reason this is such a big disadvantage is that its the primary way new grads land jobs and get their foot in the door. I think the lack of a leadership portion really sets us far behind other new grads when it comes to finding jobs. Even if your leadership rotation doesn't land you a job in that specific area, you'd at least be able to put it on your resume. I've been really disappointed by that, and if I didn't already have a job lined up, that would be really stressful to me.

The new lab is amazing though. We have a bunch of those really cool simulation dummies, and its set up like an ICU with a pyxis and everything.

Good luck! The pre-req part is the worst IMO, once you get into the actually nursing program the time will fly and its so interesting!

I applied last year and only had 126 points, didn't get in :crying2:. I applied this Spring with 132 points and have not heard anything yet. I have my fingerds crossed:uhoh3:! Anyone else apply this spring?

I applied with 129 but still haven't heard anything. I know that for the spring enrollment the required was 131. I am struggling with the compass math portion. I have a 76 but still need to keep working on it if I don't get in this time.

I haven't heard anything either and i had 132 points. You may try going through Metro Tech for your compass.. it was much easier for me. I was able to bump my math from a 63 to a 70. If you need any help getting your points up, let me know! I would be happy to talk with you and see what you could do. Good luck and hopefully I will get to MEET you in the fall nursing classes!!!! :D

I took Elementary Algebra this semester & am enrolled for Intermediate this summer. The only problem is now my Algebra scores have jumped way up, not the Pre-alg portion...sigh. Would be great to meet you this fall too!

are you or have you considered taking a CNA course? I took one through MOORE NORMAN and it was a breeze and gave me 6 points...
