Roll call: Hillsborough Community College Spring 2011

Published

I'm sure that it's probably waaaay to early for this thread, but I figured what the heck. I have all of my application documents just about ready for submission. Just need to add the self addressed postcard and my check.

My main concern though is my Eng I credit. I already have a BS in Biology. The school I attended rewarded me with the Eng I credit based solely on my ACT score. I was originally going to apply for the Spring 2009 class and as I was reviewing my transcripts, I notice that HCC had not given me credit for Eng I. I contacted the Dean of Student Services at the DM campus about it and he referred me to the Asst Dean. From there it pretty much got ugly. My transcript originally had it listed as CLEP credit but I didn't have any CLEP scores of course. I had transferred several times and was given credit every where I went with no questions asked. Not to mention that I actually already have a BS so you would think that I wouldn't have to worry about any of the general education courses. I told all of this to the Asst Dean and the reply that I got was that the original "college awarded the credit in an unorthodox manner and that it wasn't her fault that HCC had higher standards than the other institutions that I had transferred to." Her email pretty much told me to f off in a not so nice way. It didn't help that I gave her a piece of my mind after receiving such a response. *sigh*

I managed to get my original transcript updated so that it no longer says CLEP. It says "ACT score 28" instead. I had an updated copy sent to HCC along with a letter explaining the change, however HCC has yet to update anything. That was last August. Sooooooo, I will be trotting my happy butt in to see an advisor on Friday and praying like heck that they make the change and accept the credit. Because I already have my BS, I absolutely refuse to go back and take Eng I. I'm not happy at all with HCC's administrative staff, but because I can't find another true evening nursing program that doesn't cost an arm and a leg....I'm pretty much stuck with them. I can't afford to quit my job and go to school full time...if I could I would be doing USF's accelerated program instead. :)

Wish me luck!!!

Plr_nursing, did you get yours personalized? Where did you order it from??

I got mine from AllHearts.com and I did have it personalized on the "disc" only but now I wish I would have had it done in both of the places they offered to engrave it......

i paid with money order, so i can't help you on the check-cashing part...but when i go to my profile in webadvisor, it no longer says "applicant"...and also when i go to "progress toward degree", it lists the nursing courses. email m.f. tomorrow, she has always been great to email me back quickly. i turned in my paperwork (into the dropbox) first thing that monday morning also, and emailed her that afternoon and she confirmed that she had received it.

thanks for the advise about e-mailing to confirm. i sent an e-mail this morning, so hopefully she will get back to me soon. i can't wait to start!

as for my uniforms, i am waiting a bit to order them. i like the dickies style pants which i've worn before. as far as the top goes i want something a little nicer than the typical boxy scrub. i have been a bit concerned about shoes and bought a pair of skechers shape ups. i worm them around the house and did not like them because i didn't think they had enough support at my arch and heel so i returned them and i ordered a pair of mbt which have a whole lot more support. the mbt are normally double the price of skecher shape ups but i got the mbts on sale. when i went through radiology school a few years ago i wore crocs and although they were comfortable my heels hurt by the end of the day. i'll let you know about the mbts....

Hopefulin10: Did you try on the Koi "Marissa" pants? They have the flat front instead of the drawsting, those are the ones I ordered and all heart has them in stock in tall sizes, they also have the Landau top. Also if you order through them and use the coupon code I posted in a previous post the amount you save will basically cover all of your shipping. I decided on the Cardiology III, I went into the uniform store over the weekend and tried them out and talked to the lady to get all my questions answered before ordering. Now I just have to decide what color. I want black but I have heard that if you have a colored scope then the doctors will be less likely to borrow them so I may just go for the plum color.

plr_nursing: My check hasn't been cashed either and my profile on hawknet has not been updated. I paid with a check and it has not been cashed. I did email MF to confirm that she received my check and forms and she got back to me within hours saying that she had, so I am not worrying right now.

I CAN'T WAIT TO GET OUR CAMPUS ASSIGNMENTS!!!!!

You have a very good point about people borrowing a neutral color stethoscope! I ordered an all black stethoscope. Maybe I can get ear pieces that are bright pink so I know it is mine and people won't want to borrow it!

Happymomma, sorry I may have already asked this, but what campus did you want? I can't wait to get the campus assignment too!

I am sorry but I am curious as to how you all know so much. I have not the slightest idea about anything, be it scrubs, you name. Where are you all getting your info. Will i find out on orientation? I am completely clueless.

For me and I'm sure most of the other people here, we have spent so much time reading the postings from this web-site and asking questions.

Yes, I have spent lots of time reading the postings on this site (even before I applied to the program), and I have asked questions on other threads. I have also done HOURS of researching scrubs, supplies, etc on the internet and have been to scrub stores to browse. I'm sure most of this will be gone over during orientation, so don't worry about it!

Happymomma: I didn't try on the "Marissa" pants. I didn't see them there....but I was completely overwhelmed when I walked in. lol ~I ordered my stethoscope in the color "Pearlized Pink". Yay!!! I can't wait to get it!

Plr_nursing: Def let us know about the shoes. I haven't heard of those before...I know I don't want the Skecher Shape Ups, because honestly, I think they look awful. haha

The shoes are ulgy but after standing on hard floors for 12 hours who cares what they look like if they take away the pain. At my age (40 something) I don't care.... The MBTs are similiar to the Shape ups but they are about $225 a pair.....OUCH! The other shoes I was looking at and they are somewhat cute are the Timberland Pro: Renova Professional, which I read and heard great things about.... It's hard to spend a lot of money on shoes that end up not helping after 12 hours....

VERY good point....I know I would choose comfort over looks too if it came down to it. I have heard some students on the other threads talk about the Nike Shox. Did you try those? I have heard they're very comfortable.

I've seen them but they didn't look as comfortable as the running shoes I use to run marathons. Until you stand on your feet for 10 to 12 hours it's hard to say, but I think they are cheap enough to try. I think sometimes it depends on your weight, how you walk, etc. When I went through Radiology School I spent six months at 40 hours per week in clinicals and I never did any research on shoes. Like I said before the cros were great but personally my heels on my feet were always killing me. I still work as an accountant and sit on my rear most of the day so until I am in clinicals I won't know for sure what works for me.

filed my appeal yesterday, the nursing committee meets on the 4th. what i was told was that if my appeal is approved i will still be placed by GPA. so you will probably not find out your campus until the appeals are decided upon and they actually fill the slots. this also means that if they have 20 alternates and 10 appeals are approved, 10 alternates will get in and 10 will not. my GUESS is that they will not assign campuses until the acceptance deadline is over, then they will have another meeting and assign campuses. alternates will also replace people who do not accept their slots. so if 10 appeals are approved and 10 people do not accept their slots ALL alternates will get in
