Roll call: Hillsborough Community College Spring 2011

Published

I'm sure that it's probably waaaay to early for this thread, but I figured what the heck. I have all of my application documents just about ready for submission. Just need to add the self addressed postcard and my check.

My main concern though is my Eng I credit. I already have a BS in Biology. The school I attended rewarded me with the Eng I credit based solely on my ACT score. I was originally going to apply for the Spring 2009 class and as I was reviewing my transcripts, I notice that HCC had not given me credit for Eng I. I contacted the Dean of Student Services at the DM campus about it and he referred me to the Asst Dean. From there it pretty much got ugly. My transcript originally had it listed as CLEP credit but I didn't have any CLEP scores of course. I had transferred several times and was given credit every where I went with no questions asked. Not to mention that I actually already have a BS so you would think that I wouldn't have to worry about any of the general education courses. I told all of this to the Asst Dean and the reply that I got was that the original "college awarded the credit in an unorthodox manner and that it wasn't her fault that HCC had higher standards than the other institutions that I had transferred to." Her email pretty much told me to f off in a not so nice way. It didn't help that I gave her a piece of my mind after receiving such a response. *sigh*

I managed to get my original transcript updated so that it no longer says CLEP. It says "ACT score 28" instead. I had an updated copy sent to HCC along with a letter explaining the change, however HCC has yet to update anything. That was last August. Sooooooo, I will be trotting my happy butt in to see an advisor on Friday and praying like heck that they make the change and accept the credit. Because I already have my BS, I absolutely refuse to go back and take Eng I. I'm not happy at all with HCC's administrative staff, but because I can't find another true evening nursing program that doesn't cost an arm and a leg....I'm pretty much stuck with them. I can't afford to quit my job and go to school full time...if I could I would be doing USF's accelerated program instead. :)

Wish me luck!!!

eusarat: I have learned everything I know from the precious class threads on here and from research online. Personally I have to have all of my purchases and preparations done before Thanksgiving because after that I will be busy with the holidays, final exams and family so I have been researching as much as possible to make sure I get it all right. Read through the other classes posts though you learn so much and it gets you so excited because you can see where you will be just a few short months from now!

plr_nursing: I am hoping for DM days, what campus are you hoping for? As for the stethoscope I have read of a couple of people using patient name tags to label theirs and last night I was thinking maybe some colored medical tape wrapped around the metal part just above the tubing would maybe do the trick.

Hopefulin10: They had a couple of pairs in discontinued colors on the clearance rack so I just tried a pair on while I was there the other day and they fit awesome! They where actually so comfortable I almost bought a pair for pajama bottoms LOL.

As for shoes I will be trying on the Nike Shox, Shapeups and maybe a couple from the uniform store just to see what feels right, I sure hope I can find some cute ones that are super comfy. I know that comfort has to come before style but really there has to be some cute ones out there that will work, I would totally be willing to spend a little extra on them if need be.

Ooooo and I got my Clinical Calculations book in the mail today so I guess I will be starting to read through that during my spare time now.

filed my appeal yesterday, the nursing committee meets on the 4th. what i was told was that if my appeal is approved i will still be placed by GPA. so you will probably not find out your campus until the appeals are decided upon and they actually fill the slots. this also means that if they have 20 alternates and 10 appeals are approved, 10 alternates will get in and 10 will not. my GUESS is that they will not assign campuses until the acceptance deadline is over, then they will have another meeting and assign campuses. alternates will also replace people who do not accept their slots. so if 10 appeals are approved and 10 people do not accept their slots ALL alternates will get in

Good luck with your appeal! I think you're correct on the timeline of us receiving our campus assignments because I was told by M.F. that we should receive them sometime during the middle of October, or the end of October depending on how many appeals are filed. So, they're definitely waiting until after the deadline, and it sounds like they are waiting until everyone has had their chance to appeal, etc, before they start sending them out. Again, good luck with your appeal and definitely let us know how it goes!

oldguyw/boat: I wish you the best of luck with your appeal! Please do let us know as soon as you find out their decision. I am glad that everyone that is having to appeal will be assigned campuses fairly and not just given whatever is left over, it is already not fair that you all need to go through the appeals process in the first place.

This is to the boat guy and others they made mistakes with. I went down to DM last tues to get a copy of my acceptance letter because I moved and it didn't get forwarded. Wondering if I got in they wouldn't tell. I emailed MF my new address and she promised to send it out again that day. Thursday rolled around and I sent MF an email confirming with her again my new address and that she sent it to the right place. Friday came and I demanded a verbal answer and I got it but not without pulling teeth. Today I got the replacement letter but it was STILL addressed wrong to my old address - it was forwarded again that's why it took so long. Just thought I'd share that so if they can't mail a letter I can imagine how gpas got recorded wrong. Please appeal, you worked too hard to wait another 8 months.

Have any of you tried on lab coats? I LOVE the Koi Michaela, and also the Koi Whitney BUT since I'm tall, I need longer sleeves than the typical lady. Soo, have you heard of/tried on any that you can recommend? I can't find sleeve length info anywhere online, so I'll probably have to try them on somewhere.

I paid with money order, so I can't help you on the check-cashing part...but when I go to my profile in WebAdvisor, it no longer says "applicant"...and also when I go to "Progress toward degree", it lists the nursing courses. Email M.F. tomorrow, she has always been great to email me back quickly. I turned in my paperwork (into the dropbox) first thing that Monday morning also, and emailed her that afternoon and she confirmed that she had received it.

I mentioned before I took your advise and e-mailed M.F. yesterday morning about whether or not my signed acceptance letter, check and all was received. I got an e-mail back from her about an hour later saying she would get back to me. Well I still have not heard back from her even after sending her another request this morning apologizing to be bugging her but also reminding her about my request. Is this normal for her to take so long to get back to your requests?

Shortly after I submitted my application in May, when I would email her (poor lady, I bugged her all the time, lol) it would take a day or two to get a reply. The last couple of times I emailed her (to ask when acceptance letters were going out, to make sure she received my money order/confirmation of acceptance letter) I had a response very quickly...in less than an hour. Don't worry though, the deadline isn't up yet....she might just be bombarded with emails asking the same thing you're asking. And don't feel bad for emailing her either. I felt the same way when I was emailing her often, but then realized that OUR tuition pays her paycheck! She is there to help us...

If it were me, I'd probably send another email either tonight or in the morning...because I definitely wouldn't want to go the whole weekend without some sort of response. I can't remember what the deadline was, do you remember? For some reason I'm *thinking* Oct 4th and if that's true, you obviously need an answer before that so that you can resubmit it in time.

You're right it was October 4th and you're right I best get an answer in case I need to re-submit everything. If she doesn't answer me I will go ahead and run all the paperwork back down to the office again on Monday....... UGH!

How tall are you? I am 5'8" and bought one for someone who is tall. I have this lab coat from the radiology program I went through and hated it because the sleeves were to long but thought I would use it again anyway. How often do you think we may actually need them?

I think that's a good idea....in the meantime, definitely email her AGAIN and express your concern. I would let her know that you're worried because the deadline is coming up! That is YOUR nursing seat, and you have the right to make sure it's saved for you!!

I don't believe they're "required". I was looking for a previous post where someone mentioned them...but I haven't been able to find it yet. lol They said that not everyone has them...but I figured it would be nice to have, in case we're doing something in our labs/clinical that could get messy. Then I wouldn't be stuck wearing yucky scrubs all day. I'm 5'10", and I hate sleeves that are too short! I'd rather roll them up a little if they were too long. ~ I'll let you know if/when I find the post. lol

I found it! Nickdost (from the Fall 2010 thread) said: "One (more) thing to think about... you might want to buy your scrub jacket at the same time, in the same brand, so that the colors will match. It is NOT mandatory to buy a scrub jacket, as you can wear a black or white long-sleeved shirt underneath your scrub top, but I just thought I would mention it. IF you buy a scrub jacket it has to be Port Wine or White in color. I bought Port Wine, from Landau, to match my scrub tops. You can NOT wear a street jacket of any kind over your scrub tops, on the hospital floor. And...if you choose to buy a scrub jacket, the HCC patch must be sewn on, just like on your scrub tops."
