Roll call: Hillsborough Community College Spring 2011

U.S.A. Florida

I'm sure that it's probably waaaay to early for this thread, but I figured what the heck. I have all of my application documents just about ready for submission. Just need to add the self addressed postcard and my check.

My main concern though is my Eng I credit. I already have a BS in Biology. The school I attended rewarded me with the Eng I credit based solely on my ACT score. I was originally going to apply for the Spring 2009 class and as I was reviewing my transcripts, I notice that HCC had not given me credit for Eng I. I contacted the Dean of Student Services at the DM campus about it and he referred me to the Asst Dean. From there it pretty much got ugly. My transcript originally had it listed as CLEP credit but I didn't have any CLEP scores of course. I had transferred several times and was given credit every where I went with no questions asked. Not to mention that I actually already have a BS so you would think that I wouldn't have to worry about any of the general education courses. I told all of this to the Asst Dean and the reply that I got was that the original "college awarded the credit in an unorthodox manner and that it wasn't her fault that HCC had higher standards than the other institutions that I had transferred to." Her email pretty much told me to f off in a not so nice way. It didn't help that I gave her a piece of my mind after receiving such a response. *sigh*

I managed to get my original transcript updated so that it no longer says CLEP. It says "ACT score 28" instead. I had an updated copy sent to HCC along with a letter explaining the change, however HCC has yet to update anything. That was last August. Sooooooo, I will be trotting my happy butt in to see an advisor on Friday and praying like heck that they make the change and accept the credit. Because I already have my BS, I absolutely refuse to go back and take Eng I. I'm not happy at all with HCC's administrative staff, but because I can't find another true evening nursing program that doesn't cost an arm and a leg....I'm pretty much stuck with them. I can't afford to quit my job and go to school full time...if I could I would be doing USF's accelerated program instead. :)

Wish me luck!!!

eddjune24: i will be in np3 starting fall 2011 and we have been having that problem in the night program every semester. i completely agree with you and to be honest we spoke directly to the dean last semester and she took care of it more then ms. s. since this will be you guys first registration since getting into the program i would suggest speaking to ms. s and if you get no where go to the dean. granted i can't guarantee that anything will be resolved since we are dealing with it again this time around. personally i understand those who are switching’s argument about life circumstances but i don’t think they understand what they are doing to others already at that campus/time. i know with our group we all started in the night program because we work or had other day obligations before even starting the program. those now trying to take our spots started in the day program and then made the choice to need the night. even though i was able to get into my class with no problem this time i still will be writing a letter to the dean regarding this matter and also because now i know we aren't the only ones who are having this problem.

hopefully you all can get this resolved and hopefully the school figures it out soon! good luck and hang in there.

Thanks. Our professor is already aware of the situation, we spoke to her about it yesterday before registration even opened because we had heard that this might be an issue. She said to email her if we didn't get in and she would do what she can. None of us realized that it would be THIS bad though!

From what I have heard, students switched to Southshore because they did not want to have their NP2 instructor and will be switching back for NP3! Of course I'm not saying this is the case for every student, but c'mon! Apparently there were some NP2 students in lab today who were originally from Plant City and they admitted that they switched to Southshore just for the semester to avoid the NP2 instructor.

These students do not realize the burden they are putting on others. There is talk about students having to QUIT the program because they live in Ruskin, and cannot afford to drive out to Plant City for class. I know for me it's going to be extremely difficult to manage. We will certainly be bringing this up to the dean if our professor can't get it resolved for us. There needs to be a change in the way this program's registration is ran.

I have already started to compose a letter to the dean....we will see where it goes.

I was one of the lucky ones to get into the SS NP2 class but am as frustrated and upset as the people who did not get in. I feel like people are taking my family from me. We got so close this semester and now we have to do it all over again. Nursing school is tough and you need support so taking half of my support away isnt right. We fight to get into the program, we should have to fight to stay at our assigned campus at the beginning. If it is a free for all then it should be a free for all from day 1 not just semester 2. The frustration is also I dont want to get close to these PC people bc they are just going to go back for NP3. Why cant I keep my group for all four semesters. I agree with needing things to be fixed bc this is more stress that none of us need while trying to finish a semester that is already stressful. Hopefully with enough complaints it will be fixed and this wont keep happening semester after semester.

Also if anyone is speaking up, I am not gonna be mean but I am also just trying to figure out who is in the SS NP2 class next semester that wasnt in NP1 there this one, so we can start getting used to who we will be with all next semester. SS really is a tight knit group so I want to know who is joining our "family" before hand.

Woot Woot first semester down 3 more to go!!!!! That was one hell of a ride and yet an absolutely AMAZING one!

CONGRATULATIONS EVERYONE!:clpty:

Hello! Congratulations on completing your 1st semester!!!

I will be starting the program this fall (August). However, my husband just found out that we may be moving to AL due to his job. The head of Nursing at the school which I will have to transfer to is requesting a syllabus for NP1. Would one of you be so kind as to share that with me? My email address is [email protected]. I retrieved the syllabus that was on the HCC site, but it is very vague. I am assuming there is a more detailed one? We would not have to move until December. So, I am wanting to go ahead and start here, and see if they will take the transfer of the NP1 classes. She told me if the curriculum matched theirs, then it would transfer.

Thank you soooooo much!!!!

I am currently working on my prereqs and contemplating either HCC or SPC. Does HCC allow anyone in the nursing program to register for nursing classes on whatever campus they want? I thought that if you were accepted at Dale Mabry, all of your classes would have to be taken there. Is this true?

EDDjune24, Did the dean get the registration for Southshore settled? I do not want to enter a program at DM and then end up in PC or SS or have to switch days to evening because someone wants my slot.

crynholder, did your registration and classmates get their registration settled without having to switch campuses?

Thanks!

Jody, yes the dean did fix the problem. From now on you will not be allowed to switch campus or go from night to days or vice versa. They have finally put it into the web advisor system to restrict registration. They will allow a change but only on special request. Also if I can make a suggestion I would say if you get into spc for the bsn go for it because hospital would prefer it. Personally I am very happy with the education I am receiving but if it wasn't for the fact I work full time I would be in a bsn program...actually the absn. Hope this helps in making your decision a little easier.
