Roll call: Hillsborough Community College Spring 2011

Published

I'm sure that it's probably waaaay to early for this thread, but I figured what the heck. I have all of my application documents just about ready for submission. Just need to add the self addressed postcard and my check.

My main concern though is my Eng I credit. I already have a BS in Biology. The school I attended rewarded me with the Eng I credit based solely on my ACT score. I was originally going to apply for the Spring 2009 class and as I was reviewing my transcripts, I notice that HCC had not given me credit for Eng I. I contacted the Dean of Student Services at the DM campus about it and he referred me to the Asst Dean. From there it pretty much got ugly. My transcript originally had it listed as CLEP credit but I didn't have any CLEP scores of course. I had transferred several times and was given credit every where I went with no questions asked. Not to mention that I actually already have a BS so you would think that I wouldn't have to worry about any of the general education courses. I told all of this to the Asst Dean and the reply that I got was that the original "college awarded the credit in an unorthodox manner and that it wasn't her fault that HCC had higher standards than the other institutions that I had transferred to." Her email pretty much told me to f off in a not so nice way. It didn't help that I gave her a piece of my mind after receiving such a response. *sigh*

I managed to get my original transcript updated so that it no longer says CLEP. It says "ACT score 28" instead. I had an updated copy sent to HCC along with a letter explaining the change, however HCC has yet to update anything. That was last August. Sooooooo, I will be trotting my happy butt in to see an advisor on Friday and praying like heck that they make the change and accept the credit. Because I already have my BS, I absolutely refuse to go back and take Eng I. I'm not happy at all with HCC's administrative staff, but because I can't find another true evening nursing program that doesn't cost an arm and a leg....I'm pretty much stuck with them. I can't afford to quit my job and go to school full time...if I could I would be doing USF's accelerated program instead. :)

Wish me luck!!!

I have a general question about the required course material books. Are the 10 or so required books used in a particular order? I have a few more books being shipped and want to make sure I have the ones needed for this weeks assignments. ( to the Bookstore if not in time). Thanks in advance, tomorrows the big day!

Since I don't know which campus you are at I can only tell you what I know from how it was for us (think its the same for everyone but not really sure). We used P&P for the first half of class and then switched the the Med-Surg (Lewis) book. Now depending on when you have Psyc in the semester will depend on when you need that book. As far as any other books, I used the calculations book until the math test, and the Davis drug guide and Nurses Pocket Guide aren't needed till the first day of class. Finally, the study guides, tabers, and all the little pocket guides I never used but you might find them useful.

THanks Crayonholder.....hope your semester goes well too.

baycare orientation has different procedure now so check your announcements for some helpful info on it. Or call the help desk.

Good luck to all

first clinical tomorrow

Hope everyone had a good first week!

Hope everyone had a good first week!

I totally did! I was so freaked out about starting and not knowing how it all would work but now I am just so excited to get it all really started and get into the hospital! The teachers are all so wonderful and understanding, they don't have unrealistic expectations for us and all seem so willing to help. I hope you all had a wonderful first week and good luck on the clinical calculations test! :)

Oh my goodness this first month has been INSANE!!!! Tests, tests, tests, and more tests! I am not sure if we are all on the same testing schedule but we are done our first two tests and doing number three this week. I have gotten a pretty good start to this semester as I hope you all have had to.

I am a little nervous about clinicals this week and having our own patient for the day. Is everyone else feeling the same way?

Well I hope you all are doing well, I am off to study! :)

wow, i've only had two tests - exam one for regular class, and the clinical calculations test. i think exam two will be next week. i started clinicals last week, and i totally psyched myself out before hand so had a hard time actually getting in there. but it's really nothing to be so nervous about, you aren't expected to be perfect and your pt is going to be happy just to have you there. we were encouraged to ask questions to our nurse and to the clinical prof, we were even allowed to buddy up and take a friend into the pts room with us if we were uncomfortable. it really wasn't half as bad as i thought it would be. =)

Yeah we have done the Med. Calc test and one content test, on our syllabus from our teacher the Med. Calc. test is test #1 so that is why I say test #3 is this week for us. So it sounds like we are all working around the same pace.

I was at the hospital last week but we mostly did bed baths and VS and where buddied up for the day but this week we are on our own. I know I will be fine it is just such a big responsibility and I want to do my absolute best for my patient, I know I won't know everything but I just want them to get the care they deserve.

Wishing you all luck on this next test!

oh okay, so your test #3 is just a week ahead of ours then! well, i'm sure you're doing great and you're gonna be the best nurse for your patient!

Ohhhhhhh the DREADED CARE PLANNNNNNNN!!!!!!

oh yes the care plan as it is now 12:38 am....clinical tomorrow .,....I didnt realize how bad I am at this till today....My next one has to be easier:clown:

to anyone who goes to plant city campus:

why in the world did you all rush over to southshore? half of our class can't get back in to southshore for the fall, and we're all extremely close. we are so frustrated and know it was plant city students because that is the ONLY campus that has spots available for NP2. there are still SIXTEEN spots at plant city, while every other campus is full. the program should not be set up as a free for all. once you are accepted into a campus, i believe you should have priority registration to that campus. then if there are any leftover spots in the campus you want to switch to you can then try to switch. we're going to try to fight this, but i really don't think we're going to get anywhere with it. it's illogical that so many people would switch after getting accustomed to their campus.
