Roll call: Hillsborough Community College Spring 2011

U.S.A. Florida

I'm sure that it's probably waaaay to early for this thread, but I figured what the heck. I have all of my application documents just about ready for submission. Just need to add the self addressed postcard and my check.

My main concern though is my Eng I credit. I already have a BS in Biology. The school I attended rewarded me with the Eng I credit based solely on my ACT score. I was originally going to apply for the Spring 2009 class and as I was reviewing my transcripts, I notice that HCC had not given me credit for Eng I. I contacted the Dean of Student Services at the DM campus about it and he referred me to the Asst Dean. From there it pretty much got ugly. My transcript originally had it listed as CLEP credit but I didn't have any CLEP scores of course. I had transferred several times and was given credit every where I went with no questions asked. Not to mention that I actually already have a BS so you would think that I wouldn't have to worry about any of the general education courses. I told all of this to the Asst Dean and the reply that I got was that the original "college awarded the credit in an unorthodox manner and that it wasn't her fault that HCC had higher standards than the other institutions that I had transferred to." Her email pretty much told me to f off in a not so nice way. It didn't help that I gave her a piece of my mind after receiving such a response. *sigh*

I managed to get my original transcript updated so that it no longer says CLEP. It says "ACT score 28" instead. I had an updated copy sent to HCC along with a letter explaining the change, however HCC has yet to update anything. That was last August. Sooooooo, I will be trotting my happy butt in to see an advisor on Friday and praying like heck that they make the change and accept the credit. Because I already have my BS, I absolutely refuse to go back and take Eng I. I'm not happy at all with HCC's administrative staff, but because I can't find another true evening nursing program that doesn't cost an arm and a leg....I'm pretty much stuck with them. I can't afford to quit my job and go to school full time...if I could I would be doing USF's accelerated program instead. :)

Wish me luck!!!

Clemso.E.Nurse, I'm sorry I didn't mean to ignore your questions. I think that your GPA as long as it's over 3.4 has a great chance of getting in, and even if it weren't I've heard of some people who have gotten in with a lower GPA. : ) I don't really know which campus is better. I've heard that all of the nursing teachers regardless of campus are great. I think the reason most people have a preference is because the amount of time they have to travel is alot less for one particular campus than for the others. I'm just guessing. I'm just starting out, so I don't know very much so far. Hope this helps. : )

Thanks SusannahS

Clemso.E.Nurse: Sorry I didn't get back to you right away, I am in the middle of a move and haven't been on here since my last post. It looks like you found M.F.'s email, this will become your life line in from now until orientation LOL. I know I emailed her with any and all questions and she is more then willing to help. It looks to me like your GPA will hold up well in the application process, I wish you luck and trust me all the waiting is so worth it in the end.

To All My Spring 2011 Cohorts: Have you all picked up your box of books? I got my books but am aware that there are more that are needed. I was told by someone that there is a bag of books that contains the rest of them, do you all know if that includes everything for this semester of for the whole course (example the psych text for third semester)? I have been totally unable to read through anything as of yet, with finals and now an unexpected move on top of Christmas being right around the corner I have been completely out of time. I will however be taking my clinical calculations book with me on holidays so hopefully I get through that before the new year.

I hope you all have a wonderful Holiday and a Happy New Year!

just started reviewing my med calculations and I am laughing at some of the math that comes back to me and the other problems I am having to review through. So I plan to really crank it out after Christmas.

To my new friend I talked to at the offices: I am not sure I did a titer test for all of mine. I believe you have to have one for chicken pox????? But not sure.

I just had them do it all.

So after two very sore arms. I have antibodies for the whole thing. And TB Test was good.

Now I still have to do the online orientation...which I somehow missed and didnt realize I had to do. So I will do that next week and hopefully we will find out our clinical assignments.

Good luck with your move and cant wait for it to start

Merry Christmas

Is anybody getting anxious? I am starting to feel overwhelmed trying to get through Christmas at the same time feeling pressure Of many many chapters to read. Let me know if any of you ladies or gentlemen have started reading. I will get my books next week. Who got the box and who went online. I feel its a bit much to research each book online. So I am throwing in the towel and getting them all together. Also any dalemabry days people? What day did they say we were doing the clinicals? Last question, I bought the nike shocks with a little orange on the sole. Do you think OK?

Hopefully you all have a wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year........CPR done (did mine at south tampa YMCA) She was quick and fun teacher.

I am also feeling very overwhelmed! I haven't started reading yet, but will this week. I bought my books from Barnes & Noble (if you're a AAA Auto Club member, you get 10 % off) and Amazon.com. I saved over $200 by doing it that way (instead of the box from HCC). Don't forget though, not all of the required books come in the box at HCC...I think it was just under $200 in books that you have to purchase separately. I think you're shoes are ok based on what Mrs S said during orientation, mine have a little bit of blue on them. If mine aren't ok, I'll just paint the little bit of blue accents with white fingernail polish. LOL

Good for you....I wish I would have done that, but just didnt have the time. I am needing to get the rest of my books and will try to get them from barnes and noble. I am going to get my scrubs tomorrow and that will be it. My first day is a clinical day and looking forward to it. We will be through this in no time. Until then I will look forward to more posts and encouragement from allnurses

They will print you out the required rest of the books at the bookstore and that print out will include additional but not required books we should get. Let me know if they dont do that for you and I will post it.

Anybody want to get some study groups going...I am in. I am morning 9-12 at dale mabry.

oh by the way...some of the people at the bookstore dont know about the print out...have them ask the manager, he is very helpful

Thanks ClKgirl

I have found ** email and she just told me i ONLY need to Fill that FDLE consent form and return it with the Application. That was a relieve!!! What are my chances to get accepted into the Nursing Program with a 3.57 GPA from the Prerequisites? Any suggestion for Campus between Dale Mabry, Southshore, Plant City? In another words, which one is better?

sorry I am just now responding to this. I would think they are all good programs...I think southshore is the newest campus so there maybe some plus and minuses with a new campus...but I am sure its all good. HCC has a wonderful reputation. Your GPA should be fine...it all depends on the pool of applicants. I am sure it will continually get more competitive. Your gpa is strong, you should do fine.

Is there anyone out there as stupid as me when it comes to clinical calculations...? I don't know the metric system at all!!! I've spent an hour memorizing lilo, hecto, deka, basic unit, deci, milli, micro, nano ...how to convert, and the abreviations. I'm up to the third page, woooohooo. There's a distinct disadvantage to having never learned the metric system :)

Anyone out there from DM days 1 - 4 who wants a study group or study buddy? I don't work (anymore) so I'm up for any time.

im trying to order some scrubs. i went to uniform city, they had no wine or merlot tops for comparing(in the greys style), so i just tried on another color to figure out the right size and dicided to order online.... but i dont know which color is right and i heard it has to be exact so can someone please tell me asap which is correct... wine or merlot?- thanks

checked around and read alot of posts that said wine so thats what i went with!... its getting so close to "go" time and im so nervous!

I haven't even bought my books yet! Not looking fwd to medical calculations at all, i'm HORRIBLE at math! :crying2:

Dewytwix,

I am sure it will make more since as we keep reading it....and doing the problems...I cant do study groups till school starts ...once somebody goes over it with you....it will totally make since.

Does anybody know about the baycare orientation.

were we asked to complete that?

Study groups will be easier once we meet everyone. I will keep you posted if we get one going. Weekends will be my study group time. I will be forming one once school starts and will def let you know.
