Roll Call Fall '05, Pre-nursing for RN program

Published

Who's starting pre-nursing for an RN program this fall and what school will you be attending?

I start Aug 16th at Tidewater Community College in Virginia Beach, Va :coollook:

I will be starting at Kishwaukee Community College in Malta, IL this fall.

I will be taking:

Rhetoric & Compostion

Intro to Psych

Basic Nurse Assistant Training (not required for pre-reqs, but would like to get experience in as a CNA while attending school before becoming an RN. I currently work in IT)

Specializes in ER.

I'm starting my "second" semester of pre-nursing on Aug. 22 at BRCC in Virginia. The reason I say "second" is that it's my second semester of pre-nursing major, but in 2002 I finished my Assoc. of Arts degree, so a lot of my pre-reqs were already done. I'm taking:

A&P I

Soc. of the Family

... this semester, and next semester:

A&P II

Ethics (UGH!!)

....and next summer:

Computer skills (b/c I flunked the Credit by Exam by 5 measly points!) unless I can figure out a way to get the credit w/out taking the class.

Then, as long as I'm accepted, it's into nursing classes Fall of '06. Thank God! I just want to be done already!

I already have a BS degree so when I started this whole process over a year ago I thought, how long could it take??? :uhoh3: I started my pre-req's last summer and have not taken a semester off since. I am in my final pre-req, A&PII right now and applied for nursing school in June. Fall is already full, has been since last fall, so I'm really hoping against hope, to get into NS in Jan. I got a bad lottery number so I may not be able to :crying2: This fall I'm taking my co-req's, Pathophysiology and Food and Nutrition, luckily my BS took care of the other two co-req's so that when I FINALLY get into NS I'll just be taking nursing classes I never dreamed the road would be so long to a ASN degree. I plan on getting my BSN after I'm working, the college has a one year program for that and since it's 6X as expensive to get my BSN first, I'll just wait until later.

I have six kids and haven't been in school since I got my BS in '91, so it's going to be hectic for a while, but well worth it in the end. :nurse:

I love this website, it is just what I've been looking for, everyone is so helpful.

I'm in my second year finally getting into the classes that count for nursing shcool. I had a 12 year absence from college and had to start over.Last year was all pre requ's to my prerequ's you know how that goes! So happy to have found some kindred spirits here!

Hello! I start my third semester on Aug. 22 at Palo Alto College (community college) in San Antonio, TX!

I started In Aug. at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, NC.. :balloons:

I am taking pre reqs -eng.102 and chem 110. hopefully i can start applying to nursing schools in spring 2006. i go to community college of philadelphia and i will apply to frankford nursing school and northeastern.  I am so nervous about applying to nursing schools and actually getting in. i kno its going to be alot of work and i hope i can handle it.

I'm starting pre-nursing at Pima Community College in Tucson Arizona on August 24th. I have a question for anyone that has time to respond. I would love to know the pros and cons of receiving an associates degree for RN verses a BSN. I do know that I can get right to work in two and a half years with an associates degree and start getting experience( which is very important from what I've been told), but what seems to make more sense to me is while I'm still in student mode I should just go on to get a bachelors. Can any one convince me either way. Thank you. Chris.

Sure Chris - I can't tell you what to do, but I can tell you what I'm going to do and give you my own personal viewpoint. :D I am going to start out with my ADN at my local community college and, once I become an RN, then I am going to get my BSN online. The reason I'm doing it this way is because I live in the middle of nowhere (literally - my town has about 60 people in it {not hundred or thousand, just 60} and the nearest CC is 50 miles away - the nearest U is over an hour and a half! (I have a hubby, 2 kids and a mortgage, so it's not like I can just up and move - besides, jobs are few and far between out here, so neither myself or my hubby can leave ours right now.) Besides all of that, an associates at a CC is typically much cheaper than at a U and therefore I can save a lot of money up front, that way I will only have to pay for the extra credits I need to get the Bachelor's at the higher U online prices. Aside from all of that, I love online learning and this is the only way I can do partial online. Now, I am only going to be pursuing my Bachelor's because I want to become an NP one day and you have to have a Masters for that (So I will be doing ADN - BSN - MSN). If I didn't have plans on becoming an NP in the future, I wouldn't do the BSN program, I would stop at the ADN because, at least around here, the BSN RN's aren't any better off than the ADN RN's. Another good reason - I don't work in healthcare currently and, if I love being an RN so much that I decide to stop there, I don't want to have put 4 yrs. into something I could do in 2. It's really a personal decision depending on your goals, but I really like the idea of doing the ADN first and going from there. Nobody says you have to take any time off between your ADN and your BSN (I don't plan to - I plan on jumping into the BSN online as soon as I complete my ADN - thus getting it done in the same amnt. of time as if I had started out in a BSN program), but it's nice to have the option if you want it. And the student loan price thing is a HUGE driving factor for me - I want to be a working nurse as quickly as possible and I don't want gazillions of dollars in student loans (especially considering I already have $9000.00 worth from a previous year of online schooling).

Good luck, hope this helps! Nice to meet you and look forward to working with you ;) What pre-nursing classes are you taking, maybe we'll be in some similar classes. My personal advice: If you remain undecided about which program you want to enter, do the ADN because you can always add to it, but once you get into a BSN program, you probably can't change your mind as easily. :)

See above reply to Chris - should answer questions for you as well. Let me know if either of you have any questions or need any clarifications. I'm definitely not an expert since I'm just a pre-nursing student myself, but I have done TONS of research into different schools/types of schooling/etc. and will be happy to help out. ;)

I'll be starting at Lake Tahoe Community College in Fall. Pretty nervous after looking at some of the things on this web site! I know I can do it, just want to do really well. (Need really good grades to get into a school around here).

Good Luck to Everyone!
