RN's getting laid off???

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I just heard at my school yesterday that RN's in our area hospital's are getting laid off! I have never heard of RN's out of work. How is it in your area? Anyone ever heard of this happening? I have to say, this is kind of discouraging information while your struggling through all the pre reqs and soon nursing school.

TIA!

I haven't heard of layoffs in my area yet but I think this is being discussed now in the "poor economy" thread on this board. My advice if you want to get into nursing is to go forward with your educational plans. Life doesn't stop because the economy is bad and anyway this is part of a cycle not a permanent condition. When the economy recovers you'll be much better off with your license and credentials than you'd be without.

Shortly after I was laid off several years ago, there were layoffs in the local acute care hospital. They started with the housekeeping staff and made their way to the nursing department. Disgusting as this sounds, not long afterward I saw a banner ad in the large metropolitan newspaper nearby advertising for nursing personnel! Of course, there was not one word about the layoffs that had just taken place. The ad also didn't mention anything about a new lower pay scale or cut back job benefits. I told myself at that time that I would never get a job at that place. They epitomized the definition of two-faced, as I saw it.

Go into Nursing because it is your passion. Don't do it for job security because there is no such thing. In my area there are not job layoffs right now but there are hiring freezes in some places because many of the OLD RNs who were working PT, Per Diem, or not at all, have returned to the work place. Plus, there are more New Grads graduating now comparred to the past and there are not enough New Grad Programs to Precept everyone. Last but not least, I landed my first choice recently. However, I cannot say the same for many of my classmates!

There are students in my class not employed yet because they are picky about things New Graduate Nurses do not have the luxury to be picky about .... For example, if your floor wishes to train New Grads at night, then you need to work nights!!! If your floor requires all nurses to work a weekend a month, you need to work a weekend a month.... I could go on! GL!:twocents:

They just laid off 150 at the next big town north to me, and 34 earlier in the year...they say its the economy

my hosital has a hiring freeze in effect. there was a series of 'layoffs'/ firings a few months ago that cause a small stir. the economy is in bad shape-but patients are still filling the hospitals. especially at this time of the year for optional surgeries, before they change deductables in the spring. upper managemnet has had no changes in how they function. and getting salary info on them

(non profit hospital) is nearly impossible. it is good to have business running this place but their lack of patient care experience makes them poor sounding boards for how to create a better hospital environment. proper staffing=beter care=better eviews=more patients=more $$$

I've heard of massive RN layoffs at a hospital further upstate (HeartsWideOpen and I may be talking about the same hospital, as 150 was the number I heard, too).

New grads in my area have a tough time finding jobs.

I'm still sticking with it. It's what I want to do, and I don't feel like my chances are any worse in nursing than anywhere else.

They are not actually "laying off" people at my hospital ... but people who work per diem are not getting the hours they usually get. Also, there is NO overtime available, people are floated more from one unit to another to avoid overtime on the busy unit, etc. We are also not hiring except in a very few special cases.

Thanks for all the replies...I am definitely going on with nursing, it was just a shock to me that nurses are getting laid off. I have wanted to be a nurse ever since I was a little girl.

Maybe the reason for some of the layoffs are that people who don't have health care insurance (I am one of them, I self pay) have to go to the hospital for whatever reason and can't pay for the bill. So if the hospitals are not getting the money from their patients then they would have to make some cuts? Makes some sense I guess. I dunno...just an opinion.

I haven't heard of layoffs, but two of the big hospital systems in Philly are on a hiring freeze now. I'm looking to be done in the spring of 2010 or 2011, so hopefully things will have turned around by then.

And did anyone else notice that this shows up on the nursing student forum list as "RNs getting laid"?

no...I didn't see that. I went back to the page with the list of threads and it says: RN's getting laid off. I supe hope it doesn't say RN's getting laid! If so, I didn't mean for it to say that. :uhoh21:

Edited to add: OMG...I just seen where you seen it! It just automatically took the off....off. lol
