Rn's & Overtime: Required or Voluntary

Published

Please chime in...I'm just interested in knowing. Thanks!!!!

Depends on your facility. At ours it's voluntary.

Specializes in nursery, L and D.

voluntary (and mostly frowned upon) on our floor............med-surg floor is probably a different story

Specializes in Palliative Care, NICU/NNP.

Our manager stands at the desk tapping her toes at 1515 asking if you're going to be out on time! Very uncomfortable situation. Doesn't matter if something happened at 1430--"You vill be out of here on time." Sucks

Specializes in Telemetry.

My hospital gets around calling it overtime because it isn't added to the end of our scheduled shift...(way to get around the law passed in IL several years ago)

But...every month we are scheduled an 8 hour shift in addition to our FT hours (that is overtime) if staffing is short, we work if they don't need us then we stay at home. Downside is they can call anytime overnight 11pm-7am (im a night shifter) to have us come in based on admissions.

This is one of the few things I hate about my hospital...oh well

we also have voluntary OT as well.......

Specializes in cardiac/critical care/ informatics.

we don't have mandatory OT.

Specializes in LTC / SNF / Geriatrics.

LTC here - OT for RNs (or any staff for that matter) really frowned on, esp. now, census is really low. Only time RN OT is mandated is for late in the day admissions. OT mandated for other staff when there is a call in that cannot be filled with a volunteer to come in to work.

:yeahthat:

Specializes in cardiac med-surg.

voluntary OT, tg

Specializes in Trauma/ED.

Washington State law requires that they exhaust all resources (proven by paperwork) before they can mandatory us but usually there is plenty of us who want OT so it isn't a problem.

My favorite is to stay over 2 hours after my shift then come back the next day for my regularly scheduled shift for OT d/t having only 10 hrs off between shifts...nice! Plus at our facility ANY extra shift beyond our scheduled shifts are OT...we have a great union contract...in my opinion anyway.

Specializes in Psychiatric.

Ours is voluntary and they REALLY, REALLY, REALLY don't like to have to pay people for overtime either!! LOL So we hardly ever get called in for overtime shifts!
