I need some help from my nursing buddies. I am an RN, population Health, working for Federal Government and was offered a Case Management position with a major insurance company starting at $5000 more a year, work from home, with some field work. My federal job is 45 minutes from home so I drive quite a bit every day to go to work. I can't decide what to do. Any one out there have advise.

Only you can compare the benefits. My understanding is federal benefits are the gold standard.

I can tell you working from home is also golden. Do some math. Good luck.

Thank you for your advise I've thought long and hard about this. I am 52yr old and retirement isn't far off. If I stay with Government I will be able to get pension. But, life is short and all the time I spend on the road, working 40hrs wk away from home is not that appealing to me. If I work from home I understand I will have "some" flexibility so going to appointments, or taking grandkids to school, or picking up a gallon of milk etc. will be much easier.

I am retirement eligible from the government in a few months. That is the only reason I remain at my present job. I also will be finished with on line BSN at the same time. I may retire from government and work another 10 years in the private sector. I t depends on how far you have to go to retirement. Good luck to you.

And...depending on how long you've been there, maybe you get your Medicare part B premiums paid for, too. Go to the case managers section of AN and see if you can glean any more info. Good luck.

I just retired from IHS after 9 years of service and I came to the conclusion that unless you're going to stay federal for your whole career, it's not worth it. So, here is my situation. Nine years of federal service (nurse for 35 years) and my pension is a bit less than 500/mo. and my pay was about 90,00/yr. So, the question is, can you make up the pay or have similar pay? Can you retire from federal service at 62 and keep your insurance for life and find another job if you need to? I've not heard of any extra coverage for Medicare but not quite sure what the other poster meant by that. I'm beginning to realize how much money I spent because of working outside the home. Gas, meals, clothes, etc. There is a calculator for federal retirement benefits that will tell you what your pension will be and that helped me a lot in my decision. Good luck.

Thank you for the information. Do you mind me asking your age when you retired from IHS and did you start receiving your pension right away .. is the pension payable for life? And did you get to keep your health insurance?

I retired at 62. OPM will have all of the information on retirement and the requirements. I.E. 5 years of service and age 62. Yes, you get to keep your benefits and pension for life. That's why you work for the federal government í ½í¸„ I believe it takes about 3 months for your pension to start.
