Greetings!
After reading past informal survey posts on allnurses, I wanted to pose this question for 2013. The intent of this post to to give myself and others a good range of pay for nurses across the US right now based on experience and location. This will be an informal guide for me to start a masters paper on (Subject: area cost of living and nurses salary). Several years ago I believe Houston was voted for best place for a nurse with cost of living adjusted, but I think this might be changing.
Things to note while reading other's salaries:
-Generally, high paying locations relate to high cost of living (SF, NYC, etc). The reverse seems to be true as well (lower cost of living=lower pay). 65$/hr may be the norm in San Francisco, but the average 1br apartment is $2800 without parking and a house costs well over $1 million. Please take this into account. We live in a big country and cost of living varies widely (especially housing costs)
If you post, please state your:
1. State you work in
2. Years of experience
3. Specialty/unit and work setting (clinic, hospital, prison, etc)

5. Differentials (if any)

Sales tax here is 8-9.5%, gasoline as of today at our local Costco is $3.69/gallon. We live in San Ramon/Danville (one of the wealthiest cities in America per Huffington post). Mortgage for our 2,000 sq ft, 4-bed, 2.5-bath home on a 5,500 sq foot lot is $2,200/month. Our gas/electric bill is $38-42/month including summer and winter. Internet/TV/home phone/cell phone bill for family of 3 is about $250/month. Neither of us have premiums for our medical or dental insurance.

5. 20% evening/night diff-weekdays; 30% evening/night diff-weekends
6. Union-yes.
A brand new, just built 4 bdrm home can be bought for 190k. Rent for a 2bdrm apt from 700-1000. Gas is about 3.50/gal. I have full family medical coverage that I pay a premium for, but dental and vision are covered by the union.
That's an amazing differential!
Wow! I can't imagine what it would be like to work in the Detroit area with all of the chaos going on right now. Are you stressed out of your mind?
I am in suburban Detroit so it isn't bad. I did work in the city until September of last year. The chaos of city government didn't affect hospital employees. I don't live in Detroit either, and am glad that I don't work directly in the city anymore that I don't have to pay city taxes.
1. Arkansas
2. 19 years
3. Hospital
4. Base Pay: $27.29 hr
5. Flat $3.75 hr for night shift
6. Union: No There is only one union Hospital in Arkansas and that is St Vincents in Little Rock. They are also Magnet and pay about $4-$7 more per hour.
Cost of living is low in the outer rural areas, but the larger cities are not much different than other larger cities in the southern states. There is a state income tax, but the property taxes are much lower than say....Texas.

5.Differentials have just been cut. Weekend option and night pay were substantially cut. They're hoping people will want to keep their shifts anyway. I don't believe the executive pay has been cut, however. I used to get time and a half plus $6/hr to come in on call but they cut out the extra $6.
