After reading past informal survey posts on allnurses, I wanted to pose this question for 2013. The intent of this post to to give myself and others a good range of pay for nurses across the US right now based on experience and location. This will be an informal guide for me to start a masters paper on (Subject: area cost of living and nurses salary). Several years ago I believe Houston was voted for best place for a nurse with cost of living adjusted, but I think this might be changing.
Things to note while reading other's salaries:
-Generally, high paying locations relate to high cost of living (SF, NYC, etc). The reverse seems to be true as well (lower cost of living=lower pay). 65$/hr may be the norm in San Francisco, but the average 1br apartment is $2800 without parking and a house costs well over $1 million. Please take this into account. We live in a big country and cost of living varies widely (especially housing costs)
If you post, please state your:
1. State you work in
2. Years of experience
3. Specialty/unit and work setting (clinic, hospital, prison, etc)
1. Iowa (that tells you alot about the next parts...) boarder community
2. 6 years RN, 3 years LPN
3. float RN in community hospital setting, approx 150ish acute care beds
4 my base is 23.16, but I get $3 /hr more bc I float. 3 of the 6 yrs I've worked there we've had our pay froze, 403 match taken away the last 4 years, now they've cut back on our PTO accrual ability.
5. Eve diff, nights and weekend is a whopping $1.00 no matter what you work.
6. Union??? :oThat will LITERALLY get you and your co-conspirators fired! Not kidding, it's happened several times. (and it's legal due to Iowa labor laws)
Ah... Nursing in the great state of Iowa... And my facility is trying to obtain the "awesome" magnet status
5. $2/hr Differential for first half (6 hours) of night shift, $3/hr differential for final half (remaining 6 hours). $1/h weekends plus the night differential if you work nights.
5. $4 evening and $6 night differentials. No weekend differential.
6. Non-union
We pay $1400 a month for a 2 bedroom 2.5 bathroom apartment in a great area, but that doesn't include any utilities. Gas here is right about $3.79 a gallon right now, and milk is +$4 a gallon.
originally from NYC but moved to CT. Was debating if i should continue to look or jump at the offer when I came across this thread & I think I'm gonna jump at it.
Cost of living wise Property taxes are around $6500/yr(a bit higher than NYC), my house cost $160,000(very good price for 3bed/2bath house in 1/4 acres in CT), groceries are around $400/mth (higher than NYC), cost of running the house around $550(electricity,water,oil,cable etc)
