RN-BSN Classes?

Published

When you are a RN with a ADN and you go back for the BSN, are your classes MOSTLY 'fluff' electives with a little management classes thrown in there? are you learning any new NURSING information... i compared(on paper) my Community College ASN program with a University BSN program and the difference seemed to be 30 or so more electives, more math, more chem, and like 2 nursing management classes.......

so im just wondering how did yall transition to ADN RN to BSN RN go

thanks for any help

(background, im confused to rather stick it out in a 4 yr program and be 'marketable' that a 2 yr RN. but i would love to get in field sooner)

kamiworm, thanks for the tip about ScholarWord! I have a MAC, too. Have you had any problems using a MAC at Chamberlain? They say on the CCN site that some things aren't compatible with MAC. Thanks! When do you graduate?

ANACatRN, I should graduate by OCT 2010 or sooner, I started Jan 2010. I am finishing 2 classes next week then I have only 3 core nursing classes, and 2 general BS classes Statistics and Advanced English Composition. My only delay is Statistics! uhg I have procrastinated taking it and now I have to do it. If you have already had statistics and algebra then you are set. They required me to take a Bachelors level Cultural Sociology eventhough I took cultural sociology for AS degree.

I have not had any problems with use of my mac on the CCN site or Devry site. I use the firefox (modzilla) browser which seems to be more compatible than Safari. And I had to get microsoft Word for mac 2008 to submit .DocX and powerpoint .pptx submissions. If you need this newer version you can buy it through the school on a temporary license for only $19. something, your advisor can help you get it.

What courses are will you be starting next week in Spring B?

Depends on the area. We still have new grad openings here. Although after the May grads, who knows??? I graduated in December and so far everyone in my class (ADN) that wanted a job, has one. Go to the graduate nurse forum..there are many people there looking for jobs still after a year of graduating. It should give you an idea of what areas are hiring and what areas are not. I would also look at your local facilities and see what they are hiring (RN or BSNs). That will give you a little more of an idea of what to pursue.

Where are you working? I would like to apply there. I am new grad, passed NCLEX, has license and can hardly get a look.:uhoh3:

kamiworm, I am taking Professional Transitions, Cultural Diversity, and Contemporary History. I can't wait to get started! I know so many doors will be open to me once I graduate. I'm going to work part-time so I can finish as quickly as possible. I'd like to finish in December, 2010, but most likely I will end up finishing in February, 2011 (if the capstone class has to be taken by itself).

I'm currently unemployed, so I have nothing but time right now. I may be starting at a peds private duty agency in the next few weeks. It really is awful how new grads have so few options right now. I graduated with my ADN 4 years ago, and it's rough for me, so it must be horrible for the new grads!

Hi Rayne

I am currently working on my RN-to-BSN online through the partnership program at University of Texas at Arlington. There are core classes such as statistics, history, government, literature, etc that you need to take but there are also nursing research, holistic health assessment, holistic care for the elderly, holistic care for vulnerable populations, management, etc. I can't say that I have learned any new nursing skills, but I do feel as though I am gaining a new perspective regarding how important my job is and what a difference I can make not only in the lives of my patients, but in the lives and careers of fellow nurses. I have learned new information regarding other populations, such as the elderly and the underserved, information that we only skimmed over during the ADN program. Like so many others, I needed to get through school and get a job. Now all my classes are online and I can go at my own pace while still providing for my family. While I am so sick of school and will be happy to have my life back, I am glad I made the decision to continue on and get a higher degree. While I don't currently have any desire to work in a management position, you never know what the future will bring and it's always good to keep all your options open.

hey worthless nut (lol)........ can I message you and ask you a million questions about the RNtoBSN at UTA AP? I can't seem to get an advisor on the phone and I'm not yet ready to apply, so I can forget them ever calling me back.

thanks if so!

I'm not surprised! Sound like many people who have degrees and can't find jobs. Yet they're stuck with student loans and cannot pay them back. So the most sensible thing to do is to go back to school and put those loans in deferment. Then you qualify for more grants and loans because of your income. I say go for it.

Hey, have you taken Vulnerable Populations yet? I am currently taking it, along with Professional Transition B. I would greatly appreciate any insight you have on these courses. Thanks!

I finished the LPN to BSN program at the Univeristy of Phoenix, what you are talking for me was Community Nursing, which I really enjoyed. We had a professional transition course which at the time I thought was a waste, since it was our second class, would have loved it more towards the end.

I will do the RN to BSN program once I am done with my ADN, and I'm also really confused at this.. they offer the program at my nearest university, which is UNC-Chapel Hill. It has one of the best BSN programs in the country, but the entire RN-to-BSN program is online. I have no idea how I'd build on my skill set with all online courses. It just seems like a bunch of fluff to me, but I want to get into a APN program down the line for my MSN, so I'll pay to play.
