most of the emt's i know are young--mid 20's
most of the flight nurses i know are a bit older---mid 30's/40's
the military is the only place i know with an age limit for nurses
i am in my 40's, and still planning to be a flight nurse--just gotta lose this extra 50 #s(huff, puff)---there is a weight limit with our flight team...
in my research on other requirements, i have found flight teams like a nurse with adult and peds experience, national certification, some require rn's to have emt certification.
hope this helps:rolleyes:
thanksxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I am not sure when I first wrote to you asking about flight nursing I imagine it was when I did my internship at a hospital that had a flight team on staff and seeing them get out the helicopter bringing in patient with there flight suits on well it really drew my attention and I felt I really wanted to be there with that team........well I am still not in that place but I did take your advise....I graduated in may 2004 and got a job in the ICCU right out of school and that is giving some good critical care experience.........by nov of this year I will start working in the ED on a partime bases working in the cardiac section of the unit for now since they feel that is the area I am most qualified for in the ED at this time.............in October God willing I will be taking nurse to emt course and then next year I will be taking God willing RN to paramedics training........having spoken to you while still a student helped me make choice that have helped me go for what I want and not get off-track. At one internship that I did I requested the critical care program but the person in charge of the program said she felt I was more suited for oncology .......I really did not like working on the oncology unit although I was very understanding and caring with my patients I just felt that area is just not suit for me .........I got disappointed that I was not picked for there critical care program and kind spent my summer not doing what I wanted .......I still felt I gained a lot from the experience and thought back on this post and your stating some reguirements I needed for flight nursing .........I may never get to do it but I least I know I will try.........I requested critical care dispite what that one person said and got it and I have not regretted my choice I have been happy on my unit ......I have great co-workers and I am learning a lot and though stressfull at times and the fact people tend to code during those early hours of the morning that is my shift with support from my co-workers I have been doing fine so far...........just thought about this post and thought I tell you thanks cause it helped me pick and guide my choices right out of school .......you can waste a lot of valueable time if you do not have clear direction...........see ya take care :)

We have four helicopters and from I've seen they are mostly in their 30s to 40s.

We have very large flight program with wide range of ages: mid-20's to late 40's and early 50's. Good luck...

I have worked with medics in their mid 20's to early 60's...I am a 47 y/o RN. Haven't found age to be a factor.

Hello -
While getting my RN a few years ago, upon touring the life flight center of a major regional medical center near Chicago, I was told that a man my age (42 at the time) was too old for serving as a flight nurse. Never mind that I am in top physical shape, and a triathlete. Ticked me off royally... only mitigating factor is that I am not qualified otherwise to do it yet, anyway. Still need ACLS, CCRN etc. Yep, age discrimination is real, folks. It stinks, so glad to see other places have fewer restrictions. Only performance counts, and nothing else... such as age, sex, etc. That's the bottom line for me. Just my $0.2....

WHO told you that you were too old?! BS ! If you have the skills you have the skills See my post on what it takes to be a flightnurse. If you would like specifics feel free to PM me, I don't check here often but I will get back to you. Too old... what a bunch of squat !

Had to laugh at the age discrimination post. I started as a flight RN at 40, let me tell you what, I RUN RINGS around my "younger" counterparts. The life experience and maturity that we "old folks" bring to the profession can't be bought or learned at any price. Tell them to hold your spot on the team, you'll be there once all your qualifications are in place and you'll show them how to get it done!

i don't know about all programs, i do know that our program does not have an age limit. as long as you can pass a flight physical you can do it..
