studying for PACU certification
congrats on taking the exam! sounds like you have all the books covered. i also used "pass ccrn" to get a different perspective on certain disease processes. the only other thing i would suggest, is to ask questions of your anesthesiologists. that really helped to understand the anesthestic agents. finally, after having taken the test, and written some of the questions, i would advise you to keep studing, relax, and go with your first mind when you test.

You might be a PACU nurse if...
you get zofran(phenergan, anzimet) out of the diebold WITH your morphine...every time. you have a nasal/oral airway out, loobed and ready to insert, while your resident is still trying to find that "noisy" sound:rotfl:

so Im fat, i cant be a flight nurse?
some flight programs, like hospital wing in memphis, require all flight nurses to be EMT-basics. the program is only a semester, and EASY for nurses. you might want to get certified in this while you are losing the weight. also, if your hospital has a flight program, find out who the big cheese is(director of program, or head nurse of the flight team), and let them know you are there, and interested(that's what i've done) i, too, am interested in becoming a CFRN, and have taken the appro. steps. just gotta(huff puff), lose the weight..... a vast critical care background also helps. lastly, you may want to consider ground transport. if nothing else, you get great experience, and if you still want flight, the DEFINITELY look at that.

What is your biggest nursing pet peeve?
wimpy, winy, pissy, no-matter-what-you-do-you-can't-please-me PATIENTS. patients who complain of pain 10/10,(PACU) and before i can get them medicated, want their pillow fluffed, their legs propped, the curtains closed, their family called, a cup water, another warm blanket ALL AT THE SAME TIME---then after they have gotten 8mg of Morphine(titrated, of course), have been snoring, they wake wondering when i am going to medicate them. :angryfire

Why do you like PACU nursing?
PACU is like a box of chocolates--you never know what you're going to get. In our level one trauma hospital, we take all comers. You may come on shift and have 4 ICU patients waiting for you, 7 more cases to come, and several people waiting to go to phase 2. Night shift is always unpredictable in PACU--something about those quiet hallways. Since we are a level 1 trauma center, we quite naturally get those friday night mva's, domestic altercations etc...who just happen to have been drinking and/or druging. they then undergo general anesthesia, subsequently wake up, still drunk and/or druged, and promptly proceed to vomit all over themselves, and any handy nurse. post-op etoh-combo anethesia breath is the absolute worst!!!! of course there are other cases, which are rewarding, and others which are just plain sad. it all comes with the territory. to cut to the chase, i like PACU because it is never dull. hope this helps

PICU Nursing in Mississippi
:) the ONLY place to work in Mississippi(as far as i am concerned), for PICU/CVICU is UMC. We are a level 1 trauma center, 16 bed unit. Gearing up to start doing ECMO(ok everyone else is already doing it), AND gearing up to start Peds transports(currently helicopter transports peds or ground with local ambulance service) I worked there for 2 years/total 6 yrs PICU. i loved it!! Don't know about salary, since i've been a nurse > 10 yrs and just about salary maxed. hope this helps....

Relationships with Docs
i find pediatric docs have the most patience, and willing to answer "stupid" questions-- they'd rather you ask, than pretend to know i find cardiac surgeons, ok ANY surgeon ARROGANT, and difficult to approach(i guess they are so tired by the time i see them) i work in a medical center, so no worries about calling someone at home to wake them--they are usually in the next room... you must be confident in your abilities/knowledge---predators try to get the wounded animal first...
