Greetings everyone,
I am considering taking HCR240 online with Rio Salado as I have read good things about the class on here. I was looking at their syllabus tonight and there are several chapters expected to be covered each week. Can any current or former students of this class elaborate on how to cover 4-6 chapters in one week? Are powerpoints provided that the quiz material comes from? It looks like the class is all quizzes and essays and a final exam. Any advice or input you could provide to help me decide whether to take this class with them is greatly appreciated.

I took it Fall 2016 and I thought it was fairly easy. The teacher was somewhat lax in the fact that the due dates were not enforced. With the exception of the syllabus needing to be signed by a certain date to confirm starting the course, the rest of the assignments were due by the end of the 8 weeks. I persoanlly liked that for the shear fact that I could hammer out as much or as little as I could cram in. I will also be honest and say that I did not read every word of every chapter. I tend to read major parts, retain what I can, then review questions, summarizing what I know and go back and read with any questions I might have. The teacher I had was very receptive, answered questions and graded assignments quickly and was always happy to offer advice if needed.

When I took it over the summer we did not have PowerPoints to consult. The book and outside sources were what we used to answer essay questions. And quiz and final exam questions were taken from textbook reading!

I am taking the course right now. I find it to be pretty easy. I only read the parts of the book that are important(you will know what is important). The essays are pretty easy and quizzes are not timed and so you can use the book. Someone made an error and allowed me to enroll in the class without bio201 and 202. So I went into this class kind of blind but some how I have a 98%. I would say take it online you will be glad you did.

Is everyone who took this course a Maricopa Co resident? I'm in Tucson and was hoping to because Pima CC is only offering Patho as an evening class in the fall, which would be very hard for my family. But I just looked it up and the out-of-county tuition is $359/credit hour?? That's nuts to me.
Cost is relative...although I am a maricopa resident, I have taken other courses online from other community colleges that were more costly because they fit into my schedule. For example, I ended up taking my BIO 182 and microbiology courses online through Germanna community college and Colby community college...cost was roughly $300 per credit; but at the time no other online options were available and I was working 2 jobs and going to school. The cost for the convienience of online class was worth it for me.
Thanks for the input :) I get that costs can vary. I just meant it seemed crazy because their in-county cost is $86/credit (similar to Pima CC) and this out-of-county cost is even more than their out-of-state cost.
You may also want to go and relook at the website...it appears that people from any county within Arizona actually pay the in county (maricop) tuition because of an reciprocity agreement. It is below the tuition chart next to the first asterisk. I am unable to cut and paste the link, but it looks like you would actually pay the cheaper price :)

Just curious if this class has a proctored final exam? Or is everything online? I'm from CA & possibly need to do this class as a prereq for ASUs post bacc program. Also, did anyone find it difficult to understand the material with it being all taught online? I normally learn material best when I'm physically in class, but I was told to do this class specifically online.
When I took it, everything was online...exams were not procured and were taken from the comfort of my own home. The course was writing extensive and in my opinion a lot of "busy work" essays.
It does not have a proctored final exam. As a current nursing student, in my opinion it doesn't really matter how well you absorb the material in pathophysiology because you're gonna see it all over again during your med surg, OB, peds, and complex care classes in the post bacc program. So chances are you're not gonna remember EVERYTHING you covered in patho. So, get the basics down and get that A since that's what's gonna get you into nursing school where they'll really highlight what pathophys you need to know. Our tests don't even really focus on the pathophysiology ever but more the nursing response to that. For example, for pneumonia you obviously know the lungs are compromised because there is consolidation of mucus that isn't being effectively cleared from the lungs. Do you really need to know the specifics of the patho? No. When I took hcr 240 I had a bunch of essays due every week and then untimed exams. I would go through and answer the questions on my own and then consult my book and the internet to fact check myself. That way I was still learning but not compromising my grade. I also had literally the worst prof who harped so hard on APA even though on multiple occasions she had wrongly deducted points and I had to provide her with multiple sources that confirmed my citations were correctly formatted. It was a nuisance but manageable. Good luck!
