I know the midterm has 4 Summarize Your Learning Essays. Are these different then the ones we hand in as homework? She says we should know all 46 of them and I think that is rediculous. So has anybody taken the midterm?:o

A couple of them come from ones you've already turned in, a couple are new. Yes, you should be able to have a passing knowledge (a couple sentences of information, at least) on all of them. If nothing else, it helps to learn the material better.

Yep- Been there a done that.. Get used to the "KNOW ALL of the ESSAYS, Because 1-4 will be on the mid-term and final".. My A&P classes and Micro classes were like this too. Yes it overwhelming, that is why they tell you to do the essays at the end of each lesson instead of waiting until the end.. Make sure you have your definitions plugged in and a good application paragraph (rubric scoring guidelines). Start studying them at least 3 weeks before yuor test. Also they really help with the rest of your studies knowing those copies...

So the four that r on the midterm dont copy some that were homework??

Well, like I already said - a couple of the essays on the midterm and final are repeats of ones you've already done and turned in as homework, and a couple are new. Of course, this was just my experience with my particular instructor - I'm sure they all do it differently, and your instructor might choose all brand new questions. Hard to say.

It's a fact of the course. You need to know all 46. No joke. And if one seems really long, ugly, and brutal - you can bet money it will be on the test. I seem to recall an essay like that for the Krebs cycle. I made it a point to do all off the essays after each lesson. Saves time. By studying all essays, you will also increase your content knowledge for the multiple choice part of the test.

No kidding! I may be wrong about this but I sense that you are looking for a way to short circuit the studying process. Having taken all of my science pre reqs at Rio, I would strongly advise against this. :nono: My personal experience, regardless of instructor or class, is that what they tell you on their syllabus, from how to study, what to study, how important various things are there for a reason and disregarding their direction will end up with a poor result (grade) in their class. Follow the guidelines in terms of what needs to be studied and then study! Stopnik is right about the need to cover all of the essays. There will always be at least a couple that had not been on previous assignments or midterms and those essays are worth a lot of points. And as was mentioned, they do help you with overall comprehension of the material.

Yep! It gets kind of tiring...every few months someone posts an "OHMYGOD" type e-mail regarding Rio classes. I found them to be more challenging - not harder, but more challenging - than most other university-level classes I have taken (BA/MA).

I agree completely and was, in fact, surprised about the level of intensity and really, difficulty of these courses. I suppose the fact they are 'internet' only classes has some bearing on the amount of info but my limited experience at the community college level is that these classes are much easier than the same course through RIO. A mistake many folks may make in thinking that 'internet' means 'easy!':lol2:

I did Biop 156 Mid term and Final and although the SYL questions were the ones that were on the midterm and final they were not ones that we had turned in already.

Taking an online course isn't always about thinking it's easier, some people take them because of where they live or don't have time to sit in class going over redundant information when you'll just have to read through the book anyway. My problem with rio salado college is that they require wayyy to much essay writing for their online classes. I've taken online classes through other colleges and they were definetly much better then rio salado. I'm not learning the subjects any better in my bio156 class with all these required essays. Their lessons need to be revamped and changed to be more interesting to learn and more fun activities rather then having the students feel like they have to write a novel just to pass the class. I could understand if it was a much higher biology class but bio156 is just the basics.

I think the reason why it never changes is because the teachers don't feel like actually doing any work with the lesson plans and changing things up a bit (poor teaching skills and just laziness) Unfortunatly I ended up with one of the teachers that won't even provide a studyguide for the midterm or final. The point of having a studyguide to not provide the answers but to give the students a better idea as to what is the most important information to learn. As this is with anything in college courses that a student takes. I am highly disappointed with the fact that rio salado has not changed the lessons for the biology classes because i always hear about the lesson indexes being the same every semester from most of the teachers. After I am done taking this bio156 class I will be sure to make it a point to NOT take anymore classes at rio salado:mad:.

After taking the midterm I will repost on here and try to remember what all was on the midterm and provide as much info as possible. Since i haven't really read anything on here that helps give a better idea as what will be on the midterm and final.

BTW it has nothing to do with trying to find a shortcut on your learning or studying. Helpful teachers are the ones that are willing to go out of their way to give their students the best idea as to what is the most important areas to study and not just tell them to read the book. There is a big difference between giving answers and actually helping your students with their studies. Just because we aren't kids anymore doesn't mean we should have any less help. I mean isn't that what teachers get paid for!

Hi Blue...

Not sure if you realized this thread was about 4 years old.

I've taken BIO156 and BIO201 at rio... not fun. The midterms and finals usually have one or two essay questions that you have turned in an essay as an assignment and the other 2 or 3 are from the list of 40+ or whatever it is.

Also use the quizzes on the cd that goes with the book or the books online website to access the chapter quizzes, I would take the quizzes over and over until i got a decent score. That helped on the 80 multiple choice questions.

Hope that helps!
