Have any of you EVER had dr. orders to give Ritalin 3 times a day at school? To be exact--- before breakfast and lunch (7:45 and 11:45) and at 2:30? I am still shaking my head on this one.
Just to explain a little further-- the 2:30 dose is at motherdearests' request so the kids aren't sooooo wild and crazy when they get home!!! pullleeeeez

I know what you meant.
At the HS setting, I only have one kid to medicate for Ritalin, and I just keep it in my office, he does it himself, at noon.
I read what Boston posted, and I also understand Cattz' questions of giving 3 doses in 6 hours.
I've learned a lot in this thread, which reinforces to me why I would NEVER want to work with the littles.
Another thing to understand is to prevent insomnia the medication should not be given 6 hours before bedtime.
I'd like to note here that stimulant usage in ADHD can be helpful to get them to sleep and eat. This paradoxical effect can be due to the child's ability to stay still long enough to eat or fall asleep. Results vary.

I think the unfortunate thing is that education is limited and practice can be based on mouth to mouth info. With neurobio pediatric issues just becoming a big area of research in recent years, and results of research being circulated so slowly (not only that but the Jenny McCarthys of the world pushing against big pharma), the individual psych needs of each child get pushed aside because no one knows what to do. What's right?
Pediatric neurobiopsych needs to be a thing. It just does.
Wow. Just Wow. I have missed a lot. I am going to give this one final comment, then I am done with this thread.
I am shocked by the uproar that it caused. But, I must say, I find it very entertaining that any nurse who has not worked in the school setting, thinks that we who have / do work in the school setting; are really going to lose much sleep over their negative comments. Unless one has been there and done that. You have no clue. That being said, this is exactly why I don't comment on threads of other specialties. I guess after 20 years as a school nurse, I am still learning. I prefer to learn from those in my specialty of choice. I wouldn't dream of going on another specialty forum and bash about something that I am sure I don't know nearly as much about as those in that field.
Good night SCHOOL NURSE friends. Can't wait till we can all wear pink on Wednesday. Except for a few that may wear red. :)

Is this directed at me?
I agree, put this to bed! However, regardless if you are a nurse in a school, hospital or clinic. Always use your resources and reflect on how you are perceived when you post to our professional boards.
Saying things like " the 2:30 dose is at motherdearests' request so the kids aren't sooooo wild and crazy when they get home!!! pullleeeeez" Can be perceived in several different ways....don't you agree?
Anyway...just saying.....hope you all have a great week!
Honestly, if the RX has these instructions on it, then do your job. It sounds like you are less concerned about the kid and just irritated that you have to deal with it 3 times a day. ( hope I am wrong)good luckJust be happy.
Had you read through the thread, you would have seen a history with the mother. Keep in mind every trip to the nurse is an interruption to learning, this is a child centered complaint, not nurse centered.
Fellow SN, I know that being isolated in schools is tough, but having nurses around isn't what it is cracked up to be AEB the prior comments. I know far too many good nurses who leave because nurses are just plain nasty to each other. I joke that I love my work but hate my job at the hospital, THIS is exactly why.
A parent is a parent, and the doctor is the one who treats and orders. We cannot follow mom's orders as she was not the one who prescribed medication :) Her request cannot be acceptable. You must state it clearly that it cannot be as it is not the proper dosing.
Actually, medication is just temporary. We must be against long term administration/dependent use of it as it has side effects too. Treatment must be coupled with support from school and parents, that is the environment. Moreover, there are natural ways to remedies to help our children or us, as parents to cope with hyperactivity, inattention. No, I don't agree.
If you do not like the way we post on this forum, I suggest you find another one. We are not about to change.
