At what age do nurses generally retire?

Early 60's I'd say, anyone else?

Actually I think most get out of bedside nursing before then, but never sat down to think about it. I'd like to hear what everyone else thinks- good question.

I've noticed a lot of female nurses retiring when their spouses do, perhaps a little earlier than 60s. But I'm sure it's no different than other professions.

I probably won't be financially ready to retire until my 70s. sigh...

Ya think? I always thought most nurses didn't make it to retirement age in the nursing profession, anyway. I'd like to think I'd be able to do something else for the last few years of my working experience, but we'll see! I just can't imagine working like I do now at 65! Not a pretty picture.

I can't see myself doing bedside nursing fulltime past 65 either, but I may be able to tolerate part time.

I can't collect SS til I'm 69 1/2 now, so probably will work a bit til then too...LOL! I think SSA hopes we'll all die before they have to pay us...:(

I know a few nurses in their 60's who still work at the bedside but it is hard on them. Nursing is very difficult on the bones and joints, as we all know. I don't know ANY older nurses who don't have arthritis of the spine, hips, knees, etc.

Maybe by 60 I'll have found a supervisory position somewhere I can stand it, where I have less physical work....we shall see. :)

----I can't collect until I am 70! Good lord..I sure hope I am not working in nursing then...maybe do volunteer work, providing I am still able!
