Resignation dilemma

Hi everyone,

I am a new nurse in a residency program. I love my facility and would want to continue with them. But I got a message from my family informing me that my mom is sick and has requested for my presence during this period. She lives in another country. So that would mean me leaving the country to go be with her. Now I have been in this residency program for just about a month and I know they have spent so much money in my training up to this point. But then my mom needs me. This is a sad situation and I don't really know what to do? I know they may not be willing to keep the position for me because I am just a new nurse and secondly because I don't even know how long I will be out for. What do I do? Should I just put in my 2 weeks resignation? (I fear they will most likely ask me to stop without waiting for the 2 weeks since I only work with a preceptor). Please advice me.

I would not resign right off the bat. Instead, just tell them what you told us. Your mom is out of the country, she's very sick and needs your help, and that are sorry for having to take such an unexpected absence.

If they terminate your employment for that reason, there may be some very sick individuals working there. If that is the case, I would publish their names for all to see.

Well, I'd take the top paragraph of advice. Tell them the truth - you realize what a bummer this is for them and you are sorry that this has come up at this time. Tell them you understand if it's not possible but you would love to continue working for them after your mom's situation has resolved because you really feel like this is a great organization (blah blah blah). Let them decide what to do with you.

Don't do the thing where you publish their names here, that would be silly.

EDIT: Oh, and I forgot to mention, as a person that lost her mom as a young adult, 100% if she is dying you need to go. Probably the only thing in my entire life that I regret is not spending more time with my mom when she was sick. If I had known how quickly she was dying I would've probably taken the semester off of university, but I didn't, and I could only spend a couple of evenings a week with her, and to this day, seven years later, I remain sad about that.

Please ignore this suggestion to ignore the advice. If they terminate your employment for having to take care of your sick mother, then chances are that they are some very bad people. No one in good conscience would do such a thing. Therefore, publish their names anywhere you can. They deserve to be blasted on the internet for that.

OP has been in her position for one month. There is no FMLA protection for her position.

You need to do some research before posted such awful advice. Op is not eligible for fmla.
