Resignation dilemma

Hi everyone,

I am a new nurse in a residency program. I love my facility and would want to continue with them. But I got a message from my family informing me that my mom is sick and has requested for my presence during this period. She lives in another country. So that would mean me leaving the country to go be with her. Now I have been in this residency program for just about a month and I know they have spent so much money in my training up to this point. But then my mom needs me. This is a sad situation and I don't really know what to do? I know they may not be willing to keep the position for me because I am just a new nurse and secondly because I don't even know how long I will be out for. What do I do? Should I just put in my 2 weeks resignation? (I fear they will most likely ask me to stop without waiting for the 2 weeks since I only work with a preceptor). Please advice me.

    You have to do what you have to do for your family. However, your fears of being released immediately are likely 100% accurate. At this point, you are costing them money and a precepetor's time. Why should they continue to pay you to train?

    In terms of the position being saved for you, I highly doubt it. Their mindset most likely will be: if she leaves during orientation for an extended period to be with her family, the odds are high that "family emergencies" will arise in the future as well.

    Family comes first, you cannot replace family, you can however replace a job. Speak to your manager and human resources, maybe there is a possibility of returning after your family emergency is resolved.

    You will need to check with HR and make sure that this early termination does not result in a Not Eligible for Rehire status. You are correct, they likely will tell you to resign the day you ask for the points that you have made. It is a sad situation. Does your mom know what resigning means for your career as a nurse? Just asking, since she is asking for your presence. What are things that your mom needs? Is it something you could do for a two week period? Sometimes your work might work something out if it is for a short period of time (1-2 weeks). Sometimes you have to do what you need to do for family.Best wishes as you decide.

    I gues my deciding factor would be how sick she is. If it's something that will likely resolve itself after a little while then I would focus on your career and talk to her over phone or Skype if possible. If she's death-bed sick, then absolutely go to her. In any event, I agree you should talk to HR and see where you stand with a possible ineligible for rehire status. Best of luck with you decision and I hope she recovers quickly.

    I would not resign right off the bat. Instead, just tell them what you told us. Your mom is out of the country, she's very sick and needs your help, and that are sorry for having to take such an unexpected absence.

    If they terminate your employment for that reason, there may be some very sick individuals working there. If that is the case, I would publish their names for all to see.
