Requirements... US citizen taking up nursing abroad.

Published

Hi everyone! I wasn't sure whether to post this topic under International or here BUT here it goes.

3 years ago, I decided to finish up my BSN in the Philippines (we all know how competitive the nursing program is in Las Vegas). I called Nevada Board of Nursing a few months ago to ask if I would have to take any additional classes there in NV being that I will be graduating from a foreign country. The woman I spoke to (whom wasn't much help) said that as long as the curriculum at my school matches the curriculum of the nursing schools there in NV, there should be no problem.

Anyway, my question is: does anyone know what the curriculum is for nursing schools in NV as far as clinical hours etc? Or even better, has anyone recently graduated from a foreign country and was able to take the NCLEX in NV? Thanks so much for your help.

Hi! Welcome to AN! Your post was moved for better response to your question.

You will need to be very careful before you take this step. There is an increasing number of states that are not accepting nursing grads from the Philippines due to concurrency issues.

Hey loriangel14, I already have one year left before I graduate nursing in the Philippines. I'm so close to getting my degree that I don't want it to have been all a waste... if that makes any sense. I have been hearing that foreign graduates trying to take the NCLEX in CA and a few other states having some problems but I am wondering about Nevada since that is where I am headed to once I graduate. If all else fails, then too bad America. I'm moving myself to another country.

"only those states that have explicit education requirements of concurrent theory and practicum will philippine nurses have licensure issues.

excelsior college new york nursing graduates have had same issue recently. see state board licensure requirements here

these are states having concerns over concurrent theory and practicum, so i would look at other 37 states to obtain license:

alabama

arizona

california

georgia

illinois

kansas

louisiana

maryland

north dakota

oklahoma

vermont

virginia

washington "

once upon a time there was "automatic reciprocity" for board scores above of a certain level. that has been phased out. then some states got together and agreed to "approve" each other with similar requirements being called "compact states". california is not a compact state.

the nurse licensure compact authorizes licensed practical nurses and registered nurses licensed and residing in a compact state to practice in other compact states without the necessity of obtaining an additional license. the nurse licensure compact facilitates nursing practice among the compact states by requiring the nurse to maintain a license in his/her primary state of residence which grants “multi-state privilege” to practice in other compact states. however, this privilege requires that the nurse practice according to the laws and regulations of each state in which the nurse practices or provides care (i.e., the state in which the patient is located at the time care is rendered), either physically or electronically.

california has recently increased/enforcing some new requirements for nursing licensure and it has become difficult for some new grads/nurses to obtain licensure in the state of california.....as well as the 12 other states that have concurrent clinical requirements. tis i believe is in response to some of the "newer" nursing schools that are online. this has effected some of the foreign nurses as well. i suggest you check the nevada board.

i hope that helps!

You may be "safe", as it reported by one person here, that the PH schools have already changed their curriculum so that your clinicals and theoraticals are now being done correctly. Have you noticed the said changes to your study courses this year already?

These are changes needed to meet the US standards so that you'll not experience the dread rejections us previous students and nurses are having.

I'm still trying to see if that's really the case, as I have a PH cousin wanting to take nursing courses, but have told her to wait to see if the CHED, PRC and PNA are all on the same page as far as being in compliance with at least the CA BON standards. She does have a SSN, lucky her, as her parents are already USC.

Hi ! I've been a nurse in the US for 4years and I graduated in 1996 from the PH, I have never had a single problem applying for licensure in CT, VT and MD. And now I just had my Nevada license thru reciprocity, and I am now on the process of endorsing it to CA (just in case I didn't get a job in NV) I graduated at Chinese General Hospital College of Nursing and my curriculum was never questioned by any of these Boards.

It has only been recently that certain states have started tightening their requirments.

It was for those who graduated yr.2004 and up,so in you're case you'll never have a problem.

Im from California, and honestly if i cant work where im from then i want to look at some other country. Does anybody have any idea on what countries are accepting a BSN degree from Far Eastern University in Manila?

You need to decide which country and then look at their requirements. Some will require a English exam and then you have the immigration requirements to go through and that also will be different
