require to take SAT if you're nontraditional studnet?

Published

I am 32 and started my prerequsite for nursing. I am attending a community college. College has been tough. I took the compass to get into college and now they say I got to take the SAT to get into nursing. Do non traditional students required to take the SAT to get their ASN? :o I don't have college credit and I have been out of school for ten years so why would I need to take the SAT Test. I'm starting to feel like I'm wasting my time trying to do nursing because I don't have anyone to help me with my daughter and none of my family cares if I make it through school. Thanks for any help and advice you can give me.

My cc had their own version of ACT that all their nursing students were required to take, unless you were willing or had taken the National ACT. I was 40 when i started my nursing program and i took the national exam so if and when i wanted to proceed to my BSN i could without having to retake it. The test the cc gave was not transferable if i wanted to complete somewhere else. I felt so rediculous sitting there with kids in my sons class at school taking that test, but i was determined to make it count. I did fine got over the score required and it ended up being a needed boost to affirm that i really could go back to school and do as well as anyone else. It had been years since i had been in any class.

I had to take it in High School to get into USC. There was also an afternoon SAT of math skills that the Nursing College required. When I finallygot around to finishing my RN USC no longer required the SAT of students over 27....I was 29.

So the short answer is some do, some don't.

Thank you all for your positive advice because it encourages me to Go For What I want No Matter What! husker-nurse I appreciate your advice. It does seem like the advisors try to discourage you and attempts to block your path so you won't go into nursing. I don't understgand why they would do it but it does seem that way. I'm feeling good today I finished two classes and I got a 96.8 average in computer class. It is a easy class. I'm thinking about transfer to a 4 year college and take my ACT Because they say ACT is a easier test. Why Not transfer If I'm going take all the test as a 4 year college. Thank you for your positive advice!

Some schools and/or nursing schools requires it. However, can I suggest something to you? Nowadays, most schools have programs for physical and mental challenged students. A lot of times, these programs can provide you with special financial aide assistance and assistance with classes. If you want, you may want to check this out.

I have a speech impair and it takes me a little longer to learn but I do alright. I feel very stressed out with classes and trying to deal with classes without getting disability. I had to take elementary algebra and I made a 96 in it. I was told I had to take the ACT. I had to take the COMPASS too (been out of hs for 10 years). So maybe it's the ACT they're wanting you to take?

My nursing school required me to RETAKE the ACT because it had been 20+ years, although they only required a score of 18 and my original score was 32! (the second time I took it, the score was the same)

I've had both ACT and SAT tests. If you did well on one, you will do well on the other.

I've gone to school off and on for most of my adult life, as well as worked at universities for the past 15 years. Most all colleges and universities have hoops for students to jump through, and it's actually worse if you're non-traditional because you don't fit into a tidy little category. You can sometimes talk someone into the path of reason, but the bureaucracy usually wins in the end.

If you want to go to the school, you have to play by their rules, however silly they may seem.

Most schools do not require non-trads to take the SAT. That's what the compass is for... it's generally for people who did not take the SAT or who have been out of school for a while. Of course, I would pick the school that DOES require the SAT lol. I think it's ridiculous. I could understand the NET or the PAX, but I think requiring the SAT is a bit silly. But, what can you do? I'm only 27, but I'm still terrified of the SAT lol. I took the ACT right out of high school, but unfortunately, they only accept it if it was in the last 7 years. Go figure. The good news is, I don't have to have the SAT to get into school, just to apply to the nursing program. I'm just getting started on pre-reqs, so I have a good year or so to prepare. I'm planning to get an SAT study guide, and I have the SAT question of the day emailed to me. (Go to www.collegeboard.com.... they have a lot of help on preparing for the test.) All you can do is your best. I'm not sure how your school does it, but the school I will be attending has a score sheet... part of your overall score is the SAT, but there are many other factors also. Just make sure to make the best grades you can and take as many classes as you can before applying (not just the few that are required), etc. It stinks, but it's just part of the journey!

I know that this is a very old thread but am curious as to how you ended up. Are you in nursing?

I'm back in school as we speak and glad the SAT wasn't required. I did take it after high school, decades ago, but no way could I do it now. My kids bypassed my math skills in about 7th grade unfortunately. I see my teenagers doing advanced algebra and calculus now and no way could I do that!
