repeated one of the pre-requisite class, still wants to get in nursing school

:o

Hi everyone, just registered today with allnurses.com.

I am seeking advise from all...as much as I will need...please feel free to leave any comments, anything will help. thanks!

a little bit about my background...

I earned my first BS from SUNY- Stony Brook in Health Science, right after that, I went through a tortuous program called EMT-Paramedic, but luckily, got passed NYS EMT-P certification exam and is now a certified EMT-Paramedic. Although I never worked as an EMT in my life!!! So I thought that was kinda wasting time for me. So I ended up now having EMT-B,EMT-P & another whole bunch of pre-hospital certifications...but has no job!:o I guess I was either giving myself up already to pursuit another career or got tired of studying REMAC (regional testing for P's who wants to work in 5 boroughs of NYC)! So this is my present life.

Just 2 years before that, when I was in SBU starting from 2001 - 2008 (yea! it took me 7 yrs to finish my basic college education:oembarrasing~), I was not always a hard working student, and I did sort of flunk myself in between those 7 yrs, and for 3 semesters consistently in my 4th yr there, I was not going to my classes at all. My grades are F,F,F,F,N/F,N/F.....all the way for about 1.5 yrs. :o Until one day, the final warning hit me like a comet hitting earth, I was on academic probation, warning, warning and reinstatement and 2nd reinstatement. However, Luckily, I met one of the greatest student advisor there, and she led me to dawn of my dark age.

She ask me to try hard and stay in college, to graduate with at least a bachelor degree. I did so, and not only so, I make it to Dean's list couple times, and last semester was even a 4.0 GPA straight. So this was my past present life about 7 year ago up until 2008.

After bumping into so many trouble in find jobs and unsuccessful, I decided to choose Nursing and that's how I ended up in CSI, right now in first semester here and a PRE-NURSING student with 3 out of 4 pre-requisite classes completed, all my credits are transferred from SBU; and still, I am taking my A&P I this semester and my average right now is like 85 in the class...:o I don't think I'll be able to get an A , anyways...

so here is my concern:

After they transferred my credit, i realized that one particular pre-requisite for nursing is Psychology, and for that class, I earned a B , and it's a repeat from previously, I got a F.

Because I wasted 3 semesters of time, and just registered and never went to any of the classes, on my transcript, all the grades were showing F, including my first Psychology class.:o Now, as I saw on the basic requirement part in order to get in nursing program in CSI, I should never repeat any of the pre-requisites even though right now my overall GPA in pre-requisites is like a 3.6. :crying2:

I am seriously in consideration of giving up nursing as a choice because of that!!

Don't know what to do at this point even though I haven't even started the application...kinda loosing my faith before even applying...HELP!:o

Advisers are notorious for leaving out information, giving misinformation, or flat out not knowing what they hell they're talking about. I would make sure I talking to an adviser in the nursing department, not just one one the general ones. Also, have a list of direct questions and if he or she can not give you a direct answer find out who can and go see them. Good luck.. your issues with the adviser is not a unique one, unfortunately.

I'm scared because there are only 2 advisors in nursing department that deal with undergrads.

I spoke with one of them before the semester started and I'm depressed, really really depressed :o

Yet amazingly, I still do well in A&P so far, never thought I could do well.:o that gives me some momentum to stay in school right now.

I don't know what will happen if I don't get in by June, My second plan is still a CUNY school, Kingsborough.

:o want to be a nurse so I don't have to work on an ambulance. LOL

I haven't read the whole thread so if I am at all repetitive then I apologize. First congrats on all your degrees my husband is also a paramedic. Don't give up just keep checking different schools some offer forgiveness if there is an obvious good trend of recent grades and the bad is a long time ago. Just don't give up if it's what you want because something will work out and a 3.6 is nothing to :crying2: about, it can easily be lifted a bit to be more competitive. I am in nursing school and got in with a 3.7!!! :)

:) I wish I could make it just like you. thankyou for encouragment!

It's not easy to get through EMT-P :) we learned similar things like EKG, pharmacology etc.

yet the requirement to get into nursing is so much tougher than paramedics, I wonder why...

:)best wishes to you and your families.

I agree with others on this post. If the website states that you can't apply if you repeated a course than you can't apply with a repeated course no matter what you grade you got for whatever reason. That is just the reality. I would consider applying to other schools. If the advisors "advises" you to still apply then it doesn't hurt to do so but don't be disappointed if you don't get in. Also, like everyone else said apply to other schools. It's your best chance of getting accepted somewhere. There are other schools out there that accept transcripts with repeated courses. You just have to find them and apply. Also be sure to follow the rules. Some schools require that you have all pre-reqs completed before applying but there is always that one (or more) student who applies while taking that last class and then is confused when they don't get in. This is the harsh reality. Sorry.

yeah, I have no doubt now about that I won't get in.

But I will still go to advising office tomorrow to find out the exact. wish me luck!

Well, sometimes an F is not counted as a repeat because the initial grade was not passing and the F will not show up on transcripts at all if you retake it. Its not a policy I agree with as I worked hard the first time around to get my grades (and we all have battles while in college), but it is a poilcy at some schools none the less. Check to see if your school has this policy and it just might come to your rescue.

This is another thing that I am trying to figure out right now actually.

my F grade in psychology is from 2005, and repeated in 2007 and got a B.

so far, from transcript department, the advisor is telling me I do well, don't need to panic, he said I will have a chance to get into nursing program here, but as I walked in nursing dept. and ask for advise, she said I will need to submit in writing about why I got a F the first time and also explain what I did during that 3 semesters when I got all F's in a roll. She certainly did not say I shouldn't apply, but nontheless, she didn't say that I can have a chance neither. I am still very depressed because of her comments. I figure if I do well in A&P versus some other students who don't do well but has a 4.0 GPA in the record, I will still be able to get in.

:o I really don't know what will happen to me, is there a 50/50 chance?

I was researching online to see if anyone had similar background like me who eventually got into nursing programs...didnt fine anything yet.

for today, it seems I can't concentrate on reading the book just because it's been bothering me the whole day.

Fs usually show on a transcript even if the class is retaken and pass. Transcripts will follow you around your whole college career, sad but true. When it comes to GPA, schools usually count the last attempt or the higher of the two grades.

:o they took 90 credits out of a total of my 129 as a transfer student.

As I was told, grades that are D or below are not transferred.

but then this is really my first semester in college of staten island, New York.

I doubt they won't look my old transcript, but if they do, what should I do? sigh~

all I can think of is that I have F's in 3 semesters, consistently. I didn't go to any of those classes.

Magically, I was reinstated again and again. dragging my 1.7 GPA to 2.36 is not easy at all~

I'll be really disappointed if no nursing school will take me based on my old transcript.

A lot of nursing schools look only at your pre-req and science GPA.. and overall GPA (using the better of the repeated classes). Honestly, I think if you can get past the repeat of your psychology class (since this is a school rule) you have as good of a chance as many others of getting into a nursing school. Don't give up!!!
