repeated one of the pre-requisite class, still wants to get in nursing school

Hi everyone, just registered today with allnurses.com.

I am seeking advise from all...as much as I will need...please feel free to leave any comments, anything will help. thanks!

a little bit about my background...

I earned my first BS from SUNY- Stony Brook in Health Science, right after that, I went through a tortuous program called EMT-Paramedic, but luckily, got passed NYS EMT-P certification exam and is now a certified EMT-Paramedic. Although I never worked as an EMT in my life!!! So I thought that was kinda wasting time for me. So I ended up now having EMT-B,EMT-P & another whole bunch of pre-hospital certifications...but has no job!:o I guess I was either giving myself up already to pursuit another career or got tired of studying REMAC (regional testing for P's who wants to work in 5 boroughs of NYC)! So this is my present life.

Just 2 years before that, when I was in SBU starting from 2001 - 2008 (yea! it took me 7 yrs to finish my basic college education:oembarrasing~), I was not always a hard working student, and I did sort of flunk myself in between those 7 yrs, and for 3 semesters consistently in my 4th yr there, I was not going to my classes at all. My grades are F,F,F,F,N/F,N/F.....all the way for about 1.5 yrs. :o Until one day, the final warning hit me like a comet hitting earth, I was on academic probation, warning, warning and reinstatement and 2nd reinstatement. However, Luckily, I met one of the greatest student advisor there, and she led me to dawn of my dark age.

She ask me to try hard and stay in college, to graduate with at least a bachelor degree. I did so, and not only so, I make it to Dean's list couple times, and last semester was even a 4.0 GPA straight. So this was my past present life about 7 year ago up until 2008.

After bumping into so many trouble in find jobs and unsuccessful, I decided to choose Nursing and that's how I ended up in CSI, right now in first semester here and a PRE-NURSING student with 3 out of 4 pre-requisite classes completed, all my credits are transferred from SBU; and still, I am taking my A&P I this semester and my average right now is like 85 in the class...:o I don't think I'll be able to get an A , anyways...

so here is my concern:

After they transferred my credit, i realized that one particular pre-requisite for nursing is Psychology, and for that class, I earned a B , and it's a repeat from previously, I got a F.

Because I wasted 3 semesters of time, and just registered and never went to any of the classes, on my transcript, all the grades were showing F, including my first Psychology class.:o Now, as I saw on the basic requirement part in order to get in nursing program in CSI, I should never repeat any of the pre-requisites even though right now my overall GPA in pre-requisites is like a 3.6. :crying2:

I am seriously in consideration of giving up nursing as a choice because of that!!

Don't know what to do at this point even though I haven't even started the application...kinda loosing my faith before even applying...HELP!:o

She certainly did not say I shouldn't apply...
You know, they do get application fees. There's no reason for them to discourage you from applying regardless of whether you have any chance.

Hey I answered your identical post on the General Nursing Student forum. Did you by any chance post your college-specific question to the regional forum?

Please don't give up.

Any non-specific program information anyone gives you really isn't going to be helpful.

What you need to do, is find programs that look at your gpa in the required prerequisite courses only AND do not care how many times you have taken courses over. It is going to be an uphill batttle, but you can find them.

Programs like that do exist. You need to do your research. If I were you, start doing mega searches for all the nursing programs within a driveable distance of your location. If you are willing to relocate (and you may have to!) you will have more options.

I am in the same boat as you. I also went to college, but didn't have my priorities in order and had an extremely low gpa. I altered my priorities and found my true passion lies in nursing. I found a program in my area that looks at your gpa in the 11 required prerequisite courses only, and doesn't care the number of times you taken courses. I have a 3.824 in those required prerequiste courses but was rejected this time around (the gpa they accepted was a 3.880 and higher). I am retaking three classes to get my prequisite gpa to a 4.0 and I WILL get in for fall of 2012.

Can you become a nurse even though you screwed up in a bunch of college classes, but turned your academic profile around? Yes. But it will be harder for you than someone who figured it out the first time around.

I am in your shoes. It isn't going to be easy. There are a lot of nursing programs in my area, but I am limited to 1-2 programs that I can apply to because of my poor preformance in college earlier, despite the fact that I am working REALLY hard right now. Also, bear in mind that we have also limited ourselves to some RN-BSN programs as well, because we are going to have to find RN-BSN programs that don't look at your overall college gpa. Again, these exist. But we don't have as many options as other people. Perhaps rightfully so.

You can do it. But expect to 'pay' for semesters you blew off by having to work harder than people who didn't do that.

You can do it. I can do it. We will do it. It only takes one program that you have to get into and get through to become a nurse.

Don't be discouraged by what others are saying. I am telling you, your dreams are NOT shattered.

Start researching programs.

The program I am talking about? Oakland community college. It doesn't mean that it is easy to get into....no sir. The lowest gpa they accepted was a 3.880 (calculated from the 11 required prerequisite courses ONLY). There have got to be other programs out there.

Like I said, it won't be easy but if you are determined you can do it. Start researching. And don't let ANYONE tell you 'it's too late, you screwed up too much, etc.'

Your previous lackluster college performance is going to be a hurdle that many other applicants won't have. But a hurdle can be jumped!

Good luck. Start researching.

I repeated a class 3 times and still got into 4 ABSN programs. There's hope!
