Hello everybody,
I am a BSN student taking a nursing theory class at the moment. I was wondering what is everybody's opinion regarding expressing religious believes in nursing theories. Does it offend you to find the word "God" when reading about certain theories. Example : "Persons have mutual relationships with the world and God" (Quote from my theory book re works of Sister Callista Roy)
I am Catholic myself so I do not find such statements offensive...I am just wondering what others think on this topic
Thanks:heartbeat
Well yeah, that's your view... and one shared by millions of your fellow adherents. Before Christ left this earth He gave the keys of heaven to Saint Peter and built a new Church, one that would lead His people to salvation.
As a nondenominational Christian I can accept the Christ part but Pete was just a dude. As is Benedict.
And to Stanley they're both just dudes. Or perhaps fictional characters.
Nobody's asking you, I don't think, to deny your faith. For my part, I'm simply asking you to leave it outside of your patients' rooms.
Don't reaffirm your atheism based on one post.Even though I agree with you about the tone of the post, it isn't the way most of us who believe in God feel.

What's funny is my mother is a devout Catholic and just today was wanting me to come to church with her. I find it hard to offer her excuses. I've just been hand delivered one.
In any case, this is why religion should be left to those trained. If it isn't you get all kinds of crusaders (sorry about that little catholic joke) and that will only hurt nursing. Especially as the number of nonChristians and nonreligious people continues to rise.

Keep it up guys! My reputation with Spidey's Mom improves with every post....:yeah::yeah:bt.
I can't leave my faith outside anything. It is who I am. I haven't met many non Christian nurses, and please don't think I look down on non-denominational Christianity. The Roman Catholic Church works hard at Christian unity.
Well don't move to DC, you'd hate it. Full of Sikhs and Muslims and heathens err atheists like me. A god forsaken land no doubt.

InMY: I respectfully disagree. If a patient is unable to read, whether due to illiteracy or blindness or sever illness, we do have to agree to read to them. Not only do we read cards or mail they've received, but consents, patient rights, and yes, a prayer from their religion of choice. As part of any admission assessment, we must ask about spiritual beliefs, and incorporate them into our care plans as necessary.
