Hello everybody,
I am a BSN student taking a nursing theory class at the moment. I was wondering what is everybody's opinion regarding expressing religious believes in nursing theories. Does it offend you to find the word "God" when reading about certain theories. Example : "Persons have mutual relationships with the world and God" (Quote from my theory book re works of Sister Callista Roy)
I am Catholic myself so I do not find such statements offensive...I am just wondering what others think on this topic
Thanks:heartbeat
And I love you both. :) I haven't had one complaint thus far.
I believe their is a misconception in Christianity that Christ is your way to salvation, but someone else might find a different path. It doesn't work that way and I would be doing a great disservice to the faith to believe any differently.
I don't expect you to understand now, but I pray God may open your heart and your mind to see the truth.
I'm sorry Babs, but I won't compromise my faith in order to please someone else. I serve one God, and He is a very jealous God. I would never be disrespectful to a patient, but I would not perform nor read a book from anything other than Christianity. The Man who hung on a cross over 2,000 years ago expects no less.

It's not at all offensive to me. It does present nursing as a pseudoscience, though. It seems entirely consistent with the world view of a nun, though.
Just my opinion but I don't think nursing care mandates the reading of a patient's holy scriptures to them.If I was your patient, and asked you to please read to me from a Jewish prayer book, and you refused, I would complain and make such a stink.
I can acknowledge a patient's beliefs respectfully without reading their scriptures, incantations, prayers, chants, etc.You don't have to believe as your patient does, but you do have to acknowledge their beliefs with respect.
I sat here for 10 minutes thinking of a reply. I can't seem to think of anything nice to say to this so I I'll just second what Methelene said.Wow... Thanks for reaffirming one of the reasons I am an atheist.

Don't reaffirm your atheism based on one post. Even though I agree with you about the tone of the post, it isn't the way most of us who believe in God feel.

Yes, Jesus was Jewish, but Jesus said that He alone is the way to salvation. He didn't leave any wiggle room their. You either believe in Him and accept Him or you don't.
Before Christ left this earth He gave the keys of heaven to Saint Peter and built a new Church, one that would lead His people to salvation. That isn't Jewish.
I don't demean other human beings for having beliefs other than my own. If asked, I simply tell them that I am a Roman Catholic, I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ. I would be happy to tell them about this man who changed my life, but if they want the Torah or Koran read, I will find someone else to do it. Nobody has asked for the last two after hearing about this man named Jesus.

J BAily: you have every right to your beliefs, I am a Roman Catholic too, I too believe in Jesus Christ. However, my beliefs are no more important that any other religious beliefs. As nurses, we must care for the whole person, and address all their needs, to include the spiritual needs.

The "find another nurse" comment was completely unprofessional and uncaring. I'm expressing my belief and my opinion on your post as another Roman Catholic Nurse.
