2 year Community College then earning a BS in Nursing- Pre Med

Nursing Students ADN/BSN

Published

Hello,

I first would like to introduce myself to everyone. My name is Shaz, and i am currently in community college. I am wanting to transfer to Northern Illinois University for their nursing program. My Question is, that what is a BS in nursing vs a BSN. Does anyone have any idea if this is a good bachelors degree for a Pre Med student? What will be my responsibilities as a BS nurse?

I have many more questions to come.

Thank you kindly

A BS in Nursing is the same as a BSN as far as I know.

The responsibilities for entry level nursing are the same for an ADN graduate and a BSN graduate, as both degrees prepare you to become a Registered Nurse at the bedside at an entry level. Both have to take the same NCLEX exam and pretty much come out on equal footing.

The advantages of getting the BSN will be seen in the future, as you want to move away from entry level positions at the bedside anad perhaps into leadership, teaching, quality, public health, etc.

It can be used as a pre-med degree, but if you're sure you want to be an MD, it's probably a better idea to follow the traditional pre-med path and not waste your time with the rigors and stresses of nursing school.

Good luck! Welcome! Pelase feel free to ask any questions that you may have.

I think med school requires a lot more hard science and math (physics, calculus, 2 years of chemistry) than a BSN degree. You could probably add that in to the program, but if your goal is to become a doctor, why not get a more general Bachelor Degree that leaves you more space for pre-med classes?

ADN if you want to do the nursing experience... get bachelors in BIO or CHEM or BIOCHEM..... BSN would just require you to spend time doing a BSN and then pursue a bunch of prereqs that you haven't gotten to ;)

BSN stands for Bachelor of Science in Nursing. so therefore BSN and BS in nursing is EXACTLY the same thing. I do not recommend pre-med students to go to Nursing school unless you want to be a nurse. MDs and RNs have very different philosophies and even though being a nurse first may earn you a respect from fellow coworkers, if you want to be a doctor then you would be wasting your time trying to put in all your nursing clinical times and all. nursing school is not easy by any means, it takes time and money. go straight into what your heart tells you and don't think that nursing is same as pre-med. it's not.
