I'm just here to offer my support to you and I confess I feel somewhat relieved to hear your story. It sounds like you did not work in nursing at all after passing boards?? If that's the case - I may be heading down the same road. I just graduated and passed NCLEX this summer, but I am having a hard time figuring out how to juggle full-time work and young kids (3 and 6) - in this economy and with retired/inactive nurses returning to the workforce, no one is willing to hire a new grad on a part-time basis.

Hello every one! I am new to the site. I graduated from nursing school many years ago, took state boards and then stayed home to raise my kids. I have decided to reactivate my RN liscence and the class starts tomorrow. I go back and forth between excited :wink2:and scared to death:confused:! I am glad I found this site and I am encourage to see I am not the only one returning to school!

Oh Lordy, do I ever understand your terror!!! I've been away - gulp - 30 years, and, like you, I need a refresher, all right. Do you - does anyone - know of a program that takes longer than a few weeks? Anywhere?

I am not sure where you are but the refresher course I am enrolled in is through the local community college. It is a 16 week online class with 2 lab days. Then you have to take a preceptorship of 72 hours in a clinical setting. You can take it concurrently. I choose to do the online theory this semester and the preceptorship next.

I am in the second unit of the course (it is broken down into 8) So far so good! After I got over the initial panic of "Oh NO! I don't remember how to take a test!" I felt better. I am very intimidated by my other classmates! So far all have had experience in hospital settings. I am not really sure where I fit in since i never worked after graduation. Several of my nurse friends have been very encouraging though. It will be interesting to see where I end up practicing!

are you near any of the memorial baptist hospital systems, they have great new nurse orrientations, also, and

you would "sorta" qualify for that status........ remember you can always collects a years experience in LTC that will look great one year later.....good luck, keep us posted, you will be fine ! :yeah:

lateagain rn there is an online refresher course located at capscare it is located in fl they also offer clinical hours i just completed the course and it was a wonderful experience and a great confidence builder good luck if i can be of any help let me know

Following this thread with interest. I am in Texas and need a refresher course. I think. I let my license go delinquent for 13 years. Is there a difference between a refresher course and reactivation course in Texas?

ok, to reactivate your lis. in Tex. you have to apply to the Tx.BON, one of the things they will require per their policy is if you have not actively practiced for 5 years, you are to do a refresher course. For me I found PHES (professional health education studies) of great benefit, they are out of the Houston area, google PHES Texas, and you should find their link, they are one of the approved sites for the Tx.BON.... PHES, holds their programs in the Houston area, San Antonio, and Dallas areas on rotations..... unless you have specific board mandated sanctions against such, you could do part of the course by correspondance, except I think ethics and jurisprudence..>..... (saved a lot of time for me)..... Freq. in this area on all nurses.com, you will see their director's replies, she is a special lady....... Good luck, worth the effort. !!!! :nurse:

There are nurses from all over Texas in my class. The online class portion is handled at Austin Community College. They are enrolled through their local community college. They will do their clinical hours in their city. The website is

I saw the PHES site too. There are 2 hospitals in Houston that they utilize. One is in the heights and very close to my parent's house. I live actually near Austin, but would prefer Houston as it would actually be easier for me as I could stay with my parents and the hospital there in the Heights is a stone's throw.

I would not start the course though for a bit as my daughter is fixing to have a baby so I need to help out with that for a while.
