Hello every one! I am new to the site. I graduated from nursing school many years ago, took state boards and then stayed home to raise my kids. I have decided to reactivate my RN liscence and the class starts tomorrow. I go back and forth between excited :wink2:and scared to death:confused:! I am glad I found this site and I am encourage to see I am not the only one returning to school!
Where did you find your refresher course? and with reactivating your license do you have to take the NCLEX over again?
in Texas no, check with your BON, there is an application, or petition process.... and the refresher course has to be BON approved....I found my refresher course site, from my BON web pages as one of their approved list...link
Phlox-- I can't send private messages yet.
So far the ACC refresher has been a good experience. I have completed the orientation, the first two units and had one conference call. The faculty has been very helpful. I have not met any in person but they are very quick to answer emails and phone calls. I also needed to get my BLS and the ACC classes were full. They helped me find a class. So far so good!
I have just completed the nurse refresher course from PHES. They are located in Stafford. It was about a 45 minute drive for me but worth it. Yvette Cheeks is the instructor, she is awesome. The rest of the staff are really nice and professional as well. The didactic portion was about a week in the classroom from 930-330. The day wasn't too long and but you got a lot of information. They give you handouts and plenty of resources such as websites and study guides to get more information if needed. They also have a one day skills lab. Then you must do 80 hours for clinical. I really enjoyed the classroom experience because you get to hear all Yvette's real life experience as well as the other nurses in the class as opposed to just reading it in a book. I felt each class included a well rounded content of legal/ethics/jurisprudence as well as the topic for the day, for example med administration. I would recommend this program to anyone considering taking a refresher course. You can find them online at http://www.phesonline.com Hope this helps!
I'm in California, not Texas, but I started a refresher course 3 weeks ago. Background: I worked 10 years as an RN, then out for 15 years. Let my license expire, and retook boards in June and passed, which boosted my confidence. I've felt really pretty confident until today.....
my first clinical day. Overwhelming! to say the least. So much to absorb. Where the supplies are located, how they chart....pharmacology!!!! (lots of IV push meds)...the IV pumps and other equipment. I shook just doing accuchecks and was so clumsy that I was embarrassed. (I can NEVER do anything when I'm being watched.) And I only worked an 8-hr shift...next weekend, it's 12-hr shifts. Holy smokes! I'm terrified to start an IV and I used to be very good at that...the new equip just doesn't 'feel' the same.
But still, somehow, I know I can do this. Three steps forward, one step back....but I'm still moving forward.
By the way....the other nurses in the program did not seem as intimidated as I did, so don't let me scare you. Has anyone else in a refresher program felt the same?
well today i received a verification of my fl license by endorsement it took approx 16 days i am now ready to re-enter the workforce after 25+ years. i am extremely glad i took a refresher course so many things have changed. it def gave me the confidence i needed to persevere on and to go back into nursing. i am excited to enter a new chapter in my life. so anybody out there with doubts, take the refresher course that is bon approved. i will keep you updated on my job search and exp to follow. good luck to everyone out there coming back into nursing, you all have been missed and the best is yet to come ! they need us older nurses back!!!!

I completed the course back in Sept of last year. It was great! I am already working, going through my orientation right now. I can't remember how much the course was, I think like $1400 or 1600. That covers everything, class, materials, clinicals. I checked into one at Alvin Community College also and it was like $1200 but, I think they only do them once or twice a year.
These stories may actually be life alering for me.
I am so frightend that I will not be able to not get my butt in gear and do this. I am almost more afraid to not taking the steps to do this than doing precedures and learning facts. I have some personal issues going on with the family and finacial issues. Also, I live on a farm and have livestock. I am a goat lady and a milkmaid so to speak, a homesteader if you will. We live off the land. Things would have to change radically and it would take me abit to get things to where I can leave. Lots of animals.
I have to untangle myself somewhat and get my ducks in a row and it is not as easy for me as it may be for others, just stating some facts. Also wondering if there is finacial aid as we live paycheck to paycheck. But if I can sell most the livestock, the feed bill would go down. However sell too much and the taxes on the land would go up.
Also husband would have to do all chores while I am off in the city doing classes.
But hearing all these stories of how these classes are is good for me because it makes it real.
So much to figure out.
