I am not a nurse but has anyone ever heard of a doctor putting a man in stirrups to do a rectal exam with a speculum?
And yes I have done a stirrup set up in the OR for those unwilling for an exam without heavy sedation. If patient is combative as well,Mentally unstable, and well some that just plain need to be checked. If there was ever a problem with a patient in the Drs office he would call and schedule an outpatient visit with us.
Not many men that allow a through exam without some type of dope on board.

I recently tok a male pt to his urologist for a urodynamics test. This involves inserting a foley AND s rectal probe. You can imagine my pt was not amused, but he didnt complain about the stirrups except that that position made his back hurt. (he has chronic back pain). I thought it was interesting, the male RN did the test and the Dr only came in at the end.

Yes, we do it in surgery for rectal surgeries. It's done exactly the same way we do the D&Cs, hysteroscopies, etc.
