Hello all,
I am a BSN graduate from the Philippines, and an RN there and in New York.
I'm sure you guys know that international BSN graduates has not been getting through the California BRN since year 2010, because of the issue that foreign graduates (esp. from the Philippines) lack units during our college / Nursing years. This said, I know zero of my colleagues who applied to take the NCLEX got their ATT, since o'10.
I recently applied to have my license in New York endorsed to California, and noted that one requirement they had is that I must provide my college transcripts from where I graduated (again, in the Philippines).
I am currently in CA, but I am thinking to just move to New York, if I am only waiting for my application to get rejected because I lack units, or cases/caseloads.
I'm looking for someone with the same case I am in, or who was in the same case.. Please help me, should I just go to New York? :(
You are most helpful steppybay! Thanks for the advice, I've been to New York, and sure as hell, I got how they've been coined as the "rudest" city in the US, and (I don't know if it's just in Times Square) but it's like every inch you move, you pay. It's crazy. I was studying for awhile here in Cali, so I inquired about those courses, the college said it would take 2 whole years, and said it would almost be like repeating the whole program.
Hi. I also graduated that same year. 2 Nclex exams? Seriously? I can't imagine! I only sent out the application last March, and with how the post office in the Philippines work, I'm guessing, it'll take my school to send transcripts to CA BRN, in about 8 months, which the BRN would probably respond to with another request, which would take another 8 months to get received and replied to. I'm guessing it'll take that application around 1.5 - 2 years, probably more. I should just choose NY then, if someone from PI would share that they got through the reciprocity/endorsement, I plan on waiting on it, however, most comments I got are discouraging.
Yes. i had to take Nclex-lvn for CA around November 2013 and Nclex-Rn for Texas around March 2014 on the same testing area. I guessed i was very fortunate to pass the latter considering i only did self review while working at the same time. I really don't know if my decision to not try to go for RN here in CA is worth it but i guess i just have to stick with my instinct and pursue working in another state. NY seems to be a good choice as i'm also considering to move there if it didn't workout here in CA. How come you didn't go for the LVN route?
Reciprocity = endorsement = applying again as a first-time applicant (in CA or any other state if not part of a compact state status, CA is NOT a part of any compact state).Of the other states mentioned TX or NV or NY, assume that CA will decline your endorsement application due to either the concurrency issue or insufficient courses or lacking the minimum clinical hours, which of the other states (TX or NV or NY) do you wish to start working as an RN and plan to work there for say 5-10 years?
That's really where you should be focusing on to start the endorsement process, "state-hopping" to here and there will not increase your chances of getting endorsed into CA, even with 5-10 years of paid RN hospital experience.
Work experience can not be used to make up any deficiencies that the CA BRN has determined on your school's transcripts. The only way to meet the CA BRN requirements is to enroll in the courses that will be approved CA BRN, this will complete the circle to obtaining the RN license in CA.
Remember also that you MUST complete the re-taking of all the deficiencies in CA before the third year of your application date or they will "abandon" your endorsement (or even if it's a first-time application). You must get them done within those 36 months as just getting enrolled in the deficient program will not be accepted (as what happens if for some reason, the courses are not completed).
Btw, NV is not 100% guaranteed to get endorsed into, as there have been some PH applicants have been declined the RN license also due to the same concurrency issues, lack of providing the PH nursing license, lacking certain courses, etc. It is all a case-by-case basis and there have been some successful PH applicants getting a NV RN license, but do you wish to start growing your roots there?
It does seem like there's been a few PH members here who have their licenses from TX and some have recently found jobs there, more so than the NV or NY (in fact, I don't recall anyone that has been working in those two states as an RN and more so in a new grad program).
Thank you for your response steppybay. After everything that you have said, i'm just gonna think about which state should i want to plant my roots in the next 5-10 years.
Hi everyone,
I also graduated year 2009 from the Phil and have the same prob with regards to concurrency issues. After a year of waiting for my RN application here in CA, i got a mail that says i wasn't able to sit for NCLEX-RN. What i did to keep me going was applied for LVN and passed the exam.
Right now, i work in a Skilled Nursng Facility with good pay . Few months after passing LVN, i decided to take RN exam for the state of Florida and got my license few months ago. I waited for few months before i decided to apply for reciprocity because of what i have read in this forum. Now my papers are still in process. Whether it is approved or not, i'm still hoping and praying that they will grant it.
I'll keep you guys posted.
Regardless, the BRN will still require transcripts from all schools that you attendd. Having a RN license from another state will not guarantee you endorsement rights. It is discouraging especially when you have been here many years and can't find a job. I have a friend who went and received her RN license and yet can't find a job. It's a hard market out there especially when you have to compete with BSN graduates and other nurses with umteen years experience. Good Luck

My brother is going to have to go through this. After high school, he left to study in the Philippines and on the other hand, I'm studying my pre-reqs right now at a CC and applying at schools here in the near future since I didn't want to limit myself. Thanks for the info! I'll def pass it on.
