Received this email today and I am steamed!!!

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I received the following email today from a RN/friend that I worked with and I am ticked! I cannot believe that this is making its way around the world wide web. At first I thought that they had just misused the word experienced and graduate. Or that perhaps they should substitute "experienced" for "burned out" or "incompetent" and "graduate" for "competent". Then I thought this email serves absolutely NO good purpose. It is just another symptom of the bigger problems in Nursing (have you seen one of these for drs? firefighters? police officers? etc?)

I personally thought it was very funny. I graduate in December and the part about a graduate nurse wearing dozens of pins and an experienced nurse not wearing them had me dying laughing!!:chuckle I totally saw myself in this, as I am perusing all kinds of websites right now looking for any and every RN pin!!

I,too, think you have to be in the nursing field to even get the jokes. You have to have seen how we nursing students/ graduate nurses run to our drug books for EVERYTHING! How we are all excited about seeing procedures and stuff. Pretty funny! I definitely saw myself in a few of the graduate nurse sayings!

Everyone has an opinion, and if u found it funny.... no harm done.... if u don't find it funny.... no harm done!

Well, I don't know what there is to get so upset about, especially considering some of it is true.

It goes to show how years as a nurse makes a person kind of jaded and cynical.

:chuckle

I thought it was kinda funny too.:uhoh21: There are many more things to work up steam over. Eg. Constant short staffing is one for me....sometimes feel like i'm a Robot.

I know some people are probably offended by this but I think it's kind of funny. Sorry! I can see myself in many of these scenarios. I think we all need to be a little more lighthearted and laugh at ourselves!

I am a new grad nurse, and I found it funny! People really need to lighten up!!! We need to laugh at ourselves in this profession. I mean a good laugh is what keeps us sane and keeps us from getting burned out!!

Sorry this has upset u alot...Though I think the joke is basically geared for nurses that have been in Nursing for a long time....there's a little humor in it, personally, I laughed when I first read this awhile back...Because I could relate myself to the ''experienced'' nurse....It didn't bother me one bit, but now I guess a new grad would see this as a bad joke...

I graduated 18 months ago and I thought it was funny! I work with a 39 year vet nurse on my unit and the differences between us are amazing. The best part of working with her is she is always willing to let me pick her brain with things I'm not sure about. If I didn't she'd worry about me.

someday you'll find this funny too.

Sorry it upset you. I'm neither an graduate nurse or experienced nurse (yet). But I've been around a lot of nurses and I find parts of it to be true. It's funny. Loved it. See the humor...

Frankly, I find the phrase "Nurses eat their young" extemely offensive and professionally damaging as a nurse, far more so than the Graduate VS Experienced Nurse, but that is just my opinion.

It's not just you, i'm beyond sick of that phrase as well.

"Nurses eat their young"

Well, its true. However, I enjoy the opportunity to precept an RN new to my dept. Seems like some [not all] seasoned RNs are not receptive to RNs new to a dept., no matter if a GN, or another experienced RN from a different specialty.

... just my .02 :)

Yes, this was posted here on the BB as well, I read it some time ago.

I thought it was quite cute ! :p

Not offensive in the least. It's meant tongue-in-cheek, with some truths thrown in there, for sure. But all in good fun.. that's all.

Well, its true.

No, it is not. It's a negative stereotypical copout for bad behavior.
