So I had a few kids in bright and early because they were throwing up in class. While they were all waiting for their parents, a discussion about sports started among the kids and somehow it turned to a discussion about women in sports - mind you I'm in an elementary school.

A 6th grade boy said women shouldn't be allowed to play sports and women only go to the gym to show off their butts.

I couldn't help at that point interject because I play sports and go to the gym, most definitely not to show off my butt, lol. Had to educate him a little bit but WOW...

The sad thing is they are learning that from their adult role models :(

Kids these days... sometimes parents forget kids are like sponges and ANYTHING you do, they'll take from it.

I was just at the gym this morning and it occurred to me that the treadmills all back up to the big front window. I had never thought of it until this morning but I run on those darn things, with my big butt in the front window for all to see...definitely not my preference, most assuredly not on purpose. :wideyed:

Anyway, their fathers ought to be ashamed, obviously they are voicing that opinion in front of their impressionable young boys. Just because women are at the gym in stretchy pants, does not mean they are trying to show off their butts. Just because you are looking, does not mean you are meant to.

I have no idea who taught this young man those ideas or why it was okay to voice them in front of people that aren't family but now I want to bring in my Spartan Race medals and Half Marathon medals to show the kids and maybe get them fired up about fitness.

I think bringing in your medals is a great idea. Nothing wrong with dispelling myths and inspiring young women. Great idea!

Exactly! Why do we teach our girls to cover up instead of teaching our boys not to gawk? The responsibility is unbalanced and insulting to men.

Yes! Representation is important! Though I disagree with the implication that it would be OK to say these things if it were in the company of family. Morals don't change when the audience does.

I had a junior high boy in my office one day talking about drone bomb attacks that had been in the news. 100s wounded and he said "Yeah, but they're, like, muslims and stuff" and I (in a very, very restrained way) told him that they still feel pain and that it wasn't only soldiers that were hurt, but random citizens and children sleeping in their beds who never knew what hit them. He seemed to consider it and I hope he remembers.

Nope don't think it's okay to say it in front of his family because I ask him if his Mom felt the same way and he stayed quiet.
